Race Weight Reduction - REAL WEIGHTS
Well I figure it's time to start my contribution here, so I'll start with my race-prep on my 1991 MR2 turbo racecar project. It should be noted that I am NOT classing this car for anything other than "time-attack" and lapping days (no fender-to-fender rules are followed). These are ACTUAL weights that I have removed from my car measured with a digital bathroom scale (me holding part, and then not holding for EACH part to reduce errors) and this will remain a running list.
The order that I have chosen to remove my parts are to do all of the "free" parts first and then the "cheap" ones and finally the "expensive" ones. I haven't really gotten to the expensive ones yet, so bear with me...this will be updated frequently. If a value is missing, I will fill it in later. I have also included the excel file of numbers I have been compiling. Actually...
I wil lbe making either a fiberglass or carbon top (or tops) to make the car a coupe. It's legal (and safe) to have the tops off, but only if you have wrist straps. Seems that the less glass that can bust in your face is better.

75 pounds for stock exhaust??? holy crap. Is this including the Cat/DP etc. or just cat-back. And what was the exhaust that you installed that was only 10 pounds? Custom?

I also am starting to get crazy with it. Look at my idea of cutting the back off of the car since there is already another firewall back there... So I guess this might turn into the "how to turn your MR2 into an Ariel Atom" thread soon. Thanks, Patrick |

No Skills

I have had the car for 6 years now and the goal was an FTD autocrosser.....it has lost approx 600 lbs and the motor dyno'd 105 whp....took it to the drags for the first time last week and managed a 14.7 @ 90.1 mph. Better still my 1/8 mile time was better than the Camaro SS I was running against (he ran a 13.3 quarter

i have a few things that i might be able to add for reduction. i see you put that you removed the stock air bag, well if you look behind the sterio there will be a huge ECU looking thing that has a huge heavy wires going into it, i believe it was heat shrink wrapped yellow. it's the air back sensor ecu, could eliminate 2-3lbs. i did this on my all-trac also and installed a ST-185 rally momo steering wheel. i lost a lot of weight with the stock air bag and ecu gone. also i dunno if you listed it or not but there is a heavy rubber/metal piece that is located on the top part of the rear cross-member bar, might be about 2lbs. i think it's a stop piece incase the motor flexed low enought to hit the cross member, but without 2000hp i don't think that will happen. i'll find some more soon if i can because im looking at doing similar reductions.

I actually did pull the airbag ECU...I have to check and see if I included it on my paper copies that I was making while weighing things. The rubber / metal part you are talking about IS included in the exhaust...sorry to not call that out.
Waiting on the car to come back from paint and I will let you guys know what some final values are. Thanks for the additions. Patrick |
