Drifting?

I was wondering about how MR2's would do drifting, I have seen pictures of K&N's drifting MR2 but I wasn't sure if anyone has actually drifted an MR2 and what kind of set up would you need to do it? I have a bone stock SW21 and I am currently racing it in Auto cross in ES but I was thinking about possibly moding it a little bit.. maybe bump up to a prepared class, but I also think it would be awesome to be able to drift it...

You could try to get ahold of the 'drift bible video' there you will find a mr2 that can drift. Your suspension and tires are most key, which makes drifting not too expensive. It would help if the MR was split 50/50. I would turn the boost down a bit too!

MR2s can drift but you wont get nice mid speed high angle slides, you'll be doing faster low angle slides. Because of the weight distribution and where the car's axis of rotation is you'll most likely just put yourself into a wall, backwards. If you really are serious you'll want a motor with more torque (v6 maybe) and more weight up front. if you look around there are some videos of a russian mr2 that are pretty good, but i cant find them or remember the name at the moment... it would be much easier to just buy a 240

these are not good drift cars - choose another "sport"

CSP is fairly open - if I were building one I'd do KW coilovers, header, exhaust, engine management system within their rules, couple of other small allowed things and whatever it took to fit the 275/35/15 front and 315/35/17 rear Hoosier like Randy Noll's car

probably not enough power to drifting though, even on narrow street tires... an ASP Mk2-T might be doable as a dual-purpose car (drifting & autox)

mr2s can drift but just cant get the angle and the drift has to be smoother and better anticipated than a FR car. The motor being in the back makes the car spin happy when you throw it around. I have done it tho and it is very fun. but if you want to be searious about it go for an ae86 or 240...

As an alternative to an S13, you could always pick up an RX-7. They make great drift cars, especially the first gens.

I own this dvd lol, the only thing I got from it is that the car has a problem with oversteering. So I suppose if you distribute the cars weight evenly as best you can, and learn how to drive like a pro. Then maybe youll have a chance.

Not only that but never practice on public streets or parking lots. Talk to people @ drifting/racing events, you would be surprised how easy it is to make connections to get safe controlled practice locations. It most likely wont be free but it will be safe and you wont risk hurting/damaging other people and their property.

Before anyone flames me saying parking lots with enough space are fine, They are not the owners of the complex have to pay for the damage you cause (and you do even if its slight its still there) to the asphalt of their parking lots and paint lines. Yes i know this damage will happen eventually due to normal wear and tear but you cause them to replace it sooner. Im speaking from experience as a property owner.

That was all I wanted to say, I am not flaming anyone nor trying to make peeps angry lol. I also race and you can get practice time if you look hard enough.

haha.. yeah if i ever do "drift' i never ever do it on streets. not worth it..
but ... (no falming intent either) in MI drifting isnt very big.. .. my school was trying to get a AutoX set up but the board shot it down.. there used to be a practice road course for the state cops that was abandoned that people used to go to but.. i thinks theres a mall there now.
the lot i "practice"(and fyi what i mean is finding out what the 2 will do at its limits and what i can safely do in it not figure 8s or that sort of thing) in is huge but ...but i know it only takes on misplaced foot to destroy a car. and im far from being a racer .. im and enthusiast and just enjoys driving my 2 .and the lot has about 700 cars in it 3 times a week and i dont think me going there once every couple weeks will hurt it much .. but i can totaly see your point .. dont get me wrong.
ive stopped going there for several months. (we had a slew of street racing incidents and deaths in this area and the 5 'o' arent giving warnings anymore)

the point you made was a very good point and should have been stated at the start of the thread.
