Cleaning gunk off of tires...
I use a tire shiner on my cars after I wash them. But the stuff I've been using doesn't come off easily. After I've used it a few times I have a nice layer of gunk on my tires. What is a good method or product for cleaning off old tire shiner?

I would be cautious cleaning your tires, you don't want to use a solvent that will dry them out and eventually crack.
I would take some dishwasher soap and use a thick mix of soap with a little water and use a scrub brush. |

I've had really good success with diluted Castrol SuperClean, the purple stuff.
1 part Castrol to 10 parts water. Spray it on the tires and scrub away with a stiff brush. You'll be amazed at the brown gunk that comes off the surface of your tires! They leave nasty little marks on the floor too. |

I'm guessing Simple Green would work well. I'd consider not using tire shine on your tires and instead using Meguiars Vinyl & Rubber cleaner if you like the look.

I would stay away from Simple Green. I read somewhere, that the US government did extensive tests, and found Simple Green over time corrodes aluminum and other metals, so they don't use Simple Green on anything anymore. I've have found SG to discolor cetail aluminum pieces in the past, not the same with the CSC though. Oh, the person who posted/authored that info said he was part of the government test. I wanna say it was on www.autopia.org over about year ago. |

Dish soap will stripe the clear right off your wheel and dull the finish on them VERY quickly. I would HIGHLY recomend not using it on your wheels, OR PAINT!! KEEP DISH SOAP ON DISHES!! |

As far as the Tires you can use any sort of degreaser, you just need to make sure you get suds on the wheels first if you have any sort of bare metal. Recently Franks Red Hot degreaser has been what i've been using and it will take all of the stuff off really quickly. You just don't want to let the wheels get dry while you are cleaning the tires. Other than that just use a pressure washer.

dish soap strips the WAX off paint, not the clear. its perfectly fine to use. it just removes anything involving dirt, wax, or oil.

for those interested, this is a good article which supports using dishwasher soap to remove wax on a car.
http://performancepartszone.com/147/...-2-paint-care/ i couldn't find any negatives on google for using dishwasher soap. |

I like to use Diluted Simple Green or some sort of diluted degreaser. In order for me to NOT get this material on the wheels I create a cardboard circle covered with duct tape the same diameter of the wheel. When I'm brushing the Diluted Cleaner on the tire I will place the cardboard disc over the wheel so as to NOT get as much of the cleaner on the wheel.
