Budget Tool Review: Mastercraft (Canadian Tire) Electric 1/2" Impact Gun

Because space and money can be tight as a student, I decided to pick up an electric impact. Canadian Tire happened to have these on sale after Christmas, I didn't pick one up but knew that they would go back on sale (stuff at Canadian Tire seems to cycle on and off sale). Got it for about $65CAD a couple months ago (Regular Price: $149.99CAD). I haven't really put it to the test yet, but it was a great investment, and I don't feel like I owe it a penny after changing a couple sets of wheels with it, which it did with ease. The fact that I can just plug it in and go, without having to worry about filling/draining or finding a compressor that can keep up. It's a little heavier than comfortable, so I wouldn't suggest it for a tool you use really often, I couldn't comment on it's long term reliability under heavy use for this at this point anyway.

Overall, I've used it swapping over 3 or 4 sets of wheels, and I think the money I have into it was well worth it just in time that I've saved over a ratchet and speed wrench. If it continues to perform under use like this even for a couple more years, I'll be very happy with it.

Specs
  • 1/2" Drive
  • 228 ft.-lbs. Max
  • 7.5 Amp Motor
  • Carry Case

Just dont go over its duty cycle....IE ramming at a crank bolt for a minute at a time...then it just burns up and dies :P

if you're pulling crank bolts and axle nuts, you might be fooling yourself with an electric gun like that.. even the high end 1/2 guns can struggle.

those are GREAT for wheels though! if you dont have air, you should definitely own one of those, and at 65cdn, thats a hell of a deal.
