building a spoiler...
so after a year or 2 of lookin at spoilers ive decided that no noe makes anything like wat i want... so im gonna build my own
need to know how to get the smoothest shape for the spoiler itself. i have the vertical supports sussed out. just unsure how to get the shape of the horizontal nice and even. i thought about usin ribs, like when ya build a blasa model plane, then laying fabric over it. kinda like when your making speaker pods. my other thought was, do it in 2 peices then fibreglass them together. do the upper side, then the lower side. any suggestions? |

Most of the companies do a 2 piece for their spoilers. Its lighter and you don't have to worry about trying to finish the surface. You may want to do the original (plug) with the balsa framework and fg and bondo, but make a 2 piece mold for top and bottom and join the pieces along the narrow part of the wing. Its alot easier to hide a seam and make it look good that way.

I don't like an MR2 without one--the back end of the mk1 looks very dated like an 80s econo-car without. The spoiler gives it a stance. Wihtout one on the mk2 it just looks bubbly and unfinished. On the mk3, it isn't absolutely necessary as per stock, but certain ones do add a little class and finish off the rear nicely; others look ridiculous.
Most cars really do not look good with them, but the lines of the MR2 and the intent of the car really dictate it have something. |

Are you talking the Do-Luck Wivern wing? That would be soooo cool, but when I finally saw the wing in person, that would be one hell of a composites project. It looks very difficult mainly because of how complex it is (even compared to the 98 wing) I wish you good luck, and I hope you can pull this off! Lets see this S.O.B.!!

The EVO and STI have funtional spoilers but less than 100lbs at 100 miles per hour (someone verify, ive read it but will accept correction). Overall, their alot of drag and not necesary. F430, Enzo both have over 300lbs of downward force, but generated by the undertray/diffuser than a gaudy wing. I think our cars would benefit more from a flat bottom and undertray/diffuser setup than wings. also they are low-drag, and effective. Le Mans cars also have Front Engine Rear drive cars, (Panoz, BMW, Porshe...) Just because a car is Mid-Rear dosnt mean its the only thing that can have wings (nor does it mean that it must have them, especially in a street car). LM cars have splitters, flat bottoms ,diffusers, and wings, but most importantly is the air going under the car than over for aero. Last edited by Billj747; 02-04-2006 at 09:48 PM.. |

Hah... it's a general statement about MR cars having spoilers, basically to put that idea into perspective. I didn't say MR2's need a spoiler, nor is the stock spoiler functional, especially with the large gaping drop off in between the wing and the roof of the car. Hell, I never said MR cars are the only cars that needs spoilers... not sure where you got that from!? And the new Porsche RS Spyder P2 car has a mid mounted configuration in the rear

even tho the mr2 has that big hole, its better design than the design of a 4-door saloon. Panoz LMP1 car was front engine prototype ![]() |

Not all MR cars have the engine in the rear... example, S2000 is technically MR but the engine is mounted in front of the cabin. So, no that statement is not the same as quoted above.
