how we prep valvecovers....

we have constantly been asked how we prep our parts for coating so im going to give a little insider.

first we start with a hot tank degreasing. it's nothing more than a ratio of purple power degreaser and water heated up to 140 degrees farenheit. we let it soak in there for about an hour. then, we remove the oil baffles and let the baffle plates soak longer while we blast the valve covers. we first blast it with 15/30 grit silicone carbide which removes all the greasy and brutal gunk that has been soaking on it for the last 16 years. this is followed by a 70 grit aluminum oxide and finally a 300 grit glass bead. at this point. if the substrate still has impurities of really bad pitting, we may or may not go back to square one and start with files and/or a power sander. after the sanding, we rince it off with water and blow it dry with clean compressed air. once it is completely dry, we outgas it at 500 degrees for 90 minutes. before we give it a chance to cool off, we spray it with denatured alchohol and let it evaporate dry. the substrate is now ready for powder. here are some pics of a valve cover after prep and ready for powder!

Jazzo
your powder coating skills are awesome, BUT your camera skills SUCK lol. Judging by those crappy pictures ( that really hurts the looks of the finished product ), That looks like a 1st grader on a sugar rush took a black and red crayon colored it trying to stay in the lines lol. IF that's how it looks lin real life, it's DEF not my style. BUT it's hard to tell cause of the pics itself.
Does it have different effects in different lighting??? Black from one angle, slightly red from another, while still retaining it's mirror effect?

To everyone else,
I am in NO WAY KNOCKING JAZZO"S WORK. THIS IS A TRIAL AND ERROR STAGE TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT FOR MY ENGINE BAY. Jazzo has been awesome to work with and has excellent pc skills.

it still retains it's reflective properties and now it also has sort of a red tint to it in dark lighting and glistens like red glitter in the sunshine. tell ya what i will do, give me your shipping address again and i will blast a soda can or something with it and send it to you. i can already tell this is going to be a PITA to media blast off so i want to be sure i do it right the first time
