I'm excited for you to get this done. I would love to have one. Have you thought about putting a 2nd cup holder infrount of the one you have?

I've always had this theory... that our cars didn't come with cup holders for a reason. They aren't made to eat and drink in, they're made to drive. Besides, the slot beside the driver's seat holds a drink perfectly if you're in a pinch or are taking a trip (provided you aren't a moron and don't forget your drink might fall out if you open the door and start to get out). I'm not knocking your design or anything, but I just think putting cup holders in sports cars is beyond rediculous. I don't recall seeing them in my dad's 911SC or my buddy's 308 Dino.

Nebraska ---> Thanks, having two cupholder's did not even come to mind good idea...

curvesrgood ----> Yes i would have to argee,
But Sadly I daily drive my car 90%
and only drive it like a true sports car is spose to be driven. 10% of the time on the track...
and atlast i do like my coffe on my daily drive
and iam a bit to big to use the slot beside the driver's seat trick..

but for that 10% i can pop it right out and have a cupholder free sports car again..Lol

Cheers

Creative is all that comes to mind when I see this - wow! Totally different approach from any that I have seen. Although I do have a cupholder piece I bought from Target that serves my needs, it is always great to see owners with such innovative and creative approaches to lack of availability for something on our cars.

Keep up the great work!

That is correct. The '85 / '86 (single DIN) were the same center console and the '87+ (double DIN) were the same from what I have been told.

Very creative. I've never seen the point in cupholders... I figured simply re-screwing the cap on made my bottle of water impossible to spill. :P

Then again, some of you silly folk with your coffee may find that very helpful.

I have thought about making some kind of doo dad to sit on top of the "shelf" above the climate control. It would maybe be used for gauges or electronic devices or something, but I still haven't been compelled by anything useful. If I do though, I will definitely use this thread as a resource to fabricate one

Definitely one thing at a time. It is easy to sidetracked starting from one little project and going to the next!

The idea I had for the shelf was something kind of square and deep. Maybe enough that it would extend back to the dashboard. The design itself would have to be played with, but for the life of me, I can't really figure out what exactly I would want to put in there. No need for an LCD; I only need a single CD deck; no real need for gauges - for now at least; no need for much of anything! I guess I will just wait until the opportunity presents itself

When these are done, if you're going to be selling them, I'm pretty sure I'm down for one.

I dont see my mr2 as a sports car, I see it as my non-work car. (I've got a thing for small cars, not fast ones)

Anyways if you can find a way to make one with 2 holders that can hold the stupidly oversized drinks from fast food places without totally ruining the car for two people to ride in (I like roadtrips) I'd be down.
However, I don't think I have the part that you showed in your first pic, looks almost like a change bin that goes infront of the shifter?

It is the ashtray and many MK1 MR2s are missing them and instead have two square / triangle plastic prongs sticking up - which holds the ashtray in place.

I removed mine a long time ago.
