MK1 Interior Restoration!

Hey guys,

Well after many years in the AZ sun my dash has finally started to crack, so I am currently undertaking a self interior restoration project (amongst fixing other things). I will be updating this thread as I get things done with pics etc.

First item up for show is the center console (sorry for the pic quality cell phone camera couldn't find my other one).

As you can see its still underway but these are progress pics.

Items Used:

1 yard of black headliner material from joanns ($15 a yard)
1 yard of black high grade upholstery vinyl from joanns ($35 a yard)
1 can of permatex headliner/carpet glue from autozone ($8 a can)

Step 1: Cover with headliner foam (sorry for lack of pics) I will try to take more step by step pics with other parts)

Step 2: Cover with Vinyl

More pics to come, nearly finished with this part

The center console is finished (there are a few areas where the vinyl isn't perfect by they are hidden when its in the car so eh.)

Pics!

I it will be while before I reinstall it on the car as I am redoing everything including rewrapping the wheel with new leather... :O

but once I have it all put back together i will show pics of the restored interior. more parts to come stay tuned!

Yeah really nice.

I watched a special on TV that toured the Lamborghini factory from start to finish on making their cars... all hand made... 14 stations and very cool...

anyway the lady that stretched the leather over the dash panel pieces used a hairdryer type piece of equipment to heat up the areas with any imperfections and then smoothed out all the wrinkles....

yea that would be a heat gun. sorry I work for an interior shop and I do thinks like this all day. I would like to let you know that you will want to use a better glue that the stuff in a can from autozone. you will want to use a good contact adhesive like the stuff I use at work.( I will get you the name of it monday when I get to work) by the way you did a very good job I cant say that I could have done much better...Just remember that heat is your best friend ( when using a heat gun you will want to keep the heat moving or you will burn the material) also make sure that your material is stretched front to back not I repeat not side to side.. It will make things look much better (nothing wrong with your work at all) as for when you start your dash you will want to cut the curling edges of you cracks and then use some 1/4" sandable foam ( I think that it is called lando foam.) it is white and it is what we use on arm rest pads because it can be sanded and it is bendable and is easy to work with....... then when you are done shaping and sanding the foam ( after you have fixed the cracks so that you will not end up with a dent in your foam...) you can then use your material to cover the dash I have to do something similar to my dash ( I went out and bought an airless plastic welder to fix mine and now I just have to cover my dash( Im going to use a carbonfiber vener ) just remember one more thing you do not really want to glue all of the material to the dash just around the edges and dont use staples that will go through the dash and your material......

if anyone has any questions what so ever about your interior you are all welcome to ask me and if I know the answer I will gladly give it to you all and if you just want some advise there is no problem with that either..... I just want your projects to look the best that you can make them....... I will gladly do work for you if you are in the general area of cincinnati ohio or surrounding areas..... I will not do mail work unless you send at least half cost up front for materials that is what My boss does and that has worked for him for 40 years..... thank you all for your time.....
