Replacing Locks and Ignition

I'm fairly sure my care was stolen in the past, I'm the fifth or sixth owner (who knows really..) and when I recieved the car it came with two keys, one for the ignition, and one for the passenger side door. (what a PITA) I'd like to replace both door locks and the.. ignition and get some fresh keys. I've been using the car as it was for over a year but now the key will simply not turn to start the car and I figure if i'm going to have it fixed I may as well do it right. What i'm not sure about is how this works, do I get replacements from Toyota or do I have this done locally or what? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Aaron.

I think the dealership will make you a new ignition cylinder based on your key or VIN. Probably the same with the door locks.

I'm in basically the same boat except I just need the ignition cylinder. Mine simply won't turn anymore and I got no ride!

I was hoping to avoid the dealership as I'm sure they will charge me atleast 3 of my limbs to get it done. Is there no other way?

If your not picky on having two keys, i just picked up an oem lock cyl. and key from advanced auto for 28 bux.... not a bad buy in my opinion. They may also sell a set with door/trunk locks but i didnt ask for anything like that. worth a shot i guess....

Whoa that's pretty cheap! Is Advanced Auto a local parts shop or something?

In theory, you can get a complete set that includes every lock in the car. The entire vehicle set is around $275, but realistically, it doesn't look to be available anymore. The best bet would be to get a new ignition lock cylinder, which is still available. It will come with two keys cut to a random code that won't match your car, but you can take it to a locksmith so that they can re-key it to match the existing locks in the car. If you do that, and get some new keys cut to the original code (i.e. not copied off your old keys), I think you will be in good shape. That's assuming that your other lock cylinders are not excessively worn or damaged.

If you can provide me with a copy of your ID and proof of ownership (title or current registration), I can cut you new keys on the original Toyota blanks with plastic head, just like the car had when it was brand new. I can also provide the code for you so that the locksmith can easily re-key the new lock cylinder to match the other locks.

69057-17081 - $89.53 - Ignition lock cylinder, SW2#
90999-00164 - $8.54 - Key, OEM Toyota w/ plastic head

Well, you're close. We get the key code from Toyota based on your VIN, then we send the new lock cylinder to a locksmith to re-key it accordingly.

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer = Toyota. Toyota does not sell their goods through Advance Auto parts. I don't know what they sold you, but I suspect it's not really OEM. Maybe some sneaky retailer has decided to name their company "OEM" in order to fool unsuspecting consumers, or someone is bringing in gray market parts. $28 is so far below what we pay for an ignition lock cylinder that it's very unlikely to be the same part.

I think ONE of my locks in the car might be original, but do you think they could reset the other one to factory settings too? I really have no idea how locks work and how t hey can change them. How expensive would this be? I think i'd like to order the part and get them all reset to the car's default. Is that possible?

Thanks Aaron.

Kind of unsettling that the dealership I went to asked for neither when I had fresh keys made for my 2, I only showed my insurance card for the VIN on it. Though I got hardware store keys instead of OEM.

Sure. You'd have to ask your locksmith what they might charge, but basically, they can disassemble a lock cylinder and replace small plates inside the lock to make it work with a given key profile.

Unsettling is the right choice of words. We always require proof of ownership and photo ID. I don't cut a key unless I know that the person getting it owns the vehicle. There's just too much at stake.
