Engine mounting + suspension parts pls Aaron

Hi Aaron,

The engine mountings have never been replaced before, I gathered its why I'm feeling some stiffness in the driver's pit during idle, am I right ? (car's idling fine at 800 rpm) Thought I need fresh rubber for the engine, i suppose it's gotten stiff with time. If I'm right, I've identified insulators/ a damper & a bush below. Am I missing something or identified a part I don't need? Lemme know pls.

Well, I think you may have identified more than you need.

First, rubber motor mounts seem to soften over time rather than stiffen up, possibly because they're always in use as opposed to something like exterior trim that never moves.

Second, the motor mounts aren't likely to need replacing on age alone. I would suggest inspecting them individually. If you hear or feel any noise or vibration at idle, it is more likely to be caused by something like a loose heatshield or bracket, or a slight tuning issue.

Third, believe it or not, the ball joints and tie rods in my '85 are still like new, even at 25 years old and 184K miles. If I remember correctly, your car has relatively low KMs on it, too, so it may still be pretty young underneath. It is definitely worth inspecting your chassis parts before condemning them.

Finally, if you're looking at replacing suspension bushings, take a look at the Prothane poly bushing kit, which replaces all of the rubber parts. It is a better product at lower cost.

Anyway, that said, here are the prices (priced each) and updated part numbers as applicable...

12351-74060 - $20.75 - DAMPER, ENGINE MOUNTING 3SG*..SW20 1
12361-74110 - $77.82 - INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNTING, FRONT
12362-74190 - $72.59 - INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNTING, RH
12372-74280 - $82.55 - INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNTING, LH
27351-70010 - $4.02 - BUSH, ALTERNATOR BRACKET
43330-39275 - $35.95 - JOINT ASSY, LOWER BALL, REAR
45047-19075 - $56.85 - END SUB-ASSY, TIE ROD, LH
45046-19195 - $56.85 - END SUB-ASSY, TIE ROD, RH
48815-17010 - $10.73 - BUSH, FRONT STABILIZER BAR, NO.1
48824-17010 - $18.01 - BRACKET, STABILIZER, FRONT
48818-17092 - $6.77 - BUSH, STABILIZER, REAR
48832-17030 - $8.89 - BRACKET, REAR STABILIZER BAR, NO.1
48787-17020 - $7.10 - CUSHION, STRUT BAR
48787-17030 - $7.10 - CUSHION, STRUT BAR
90948-01003 - $1.59 - CUSHION (FOR ENGINE LATERAL CONTROL ROD)
48808-17010 - $21.67 - ROD SUB-ASSY, ENGINE LATERAL CONTROL

Ok Aaron, thats a lot of good advise, I'll need some more to be conclusive -

On Mounting - There is some vibration when the engine is cold, of course it recedes as the engine warms up but nothing that troubles me. You are right, the mountings would be softer with age causing a cold engine to pass some vibration on to the seats but I wouldn't know... have no clue what an MR2 with fresh mountings feels like or does a cold engine on our cars cause a little rough weather. It doesn't seem as calm on a cold engine like a cold Toyota Camry does is the only hint I know.
- I'll check the mountings to see what I can find.

On suspension -
My front ball joints are new. I've inspected them & they barely move with hands.
The rubber boots in the rear ball joints are torn, which is why I figured their time is done. I don't know if they last way after their boots are torn or not. Any advise here would be great.

As for the other suspension bushes etc. I've seen some cracks on the stabilizer bushes in the front. I decided to do most of the rear bushings based on the worn boots in the ball joints. There is no sound in the suspension so I have no fixes to make in the rear, I just took the age factor of the rubber into consideration.

Having said that, will take your advise and check the entire suspension.
Just let me know if cut up/ worn boots in ball joints is sufficient to replace them or not. I really don't want to pull them out & inspect but surely will if I need to.
The only factor to consider is - 5 miles on my country roads = 50 miles on yours mate. Roads are looking great but only recently around here. 10 years ago, I wonder where the first owner drove my car... I've seen vehicles going into pot holes and not returning

Thx Aaron

Well, it probably never will. Everything on a Camry is made extra-soft to absorb all the little mechanical unpleasantness it can. So it'll always be softer, quieter, smoother than an MR2, even if they have the exact same engine in the exact same state of tune.

You will probably want to replace them if the boots are torn, but you do not have to remove the ball joints to inspect for wear. Have your mechanic put the car on a lift, then put a pry bar between the knuckle and the control arm. Check for looseness in the ball joint by trying to move the control arm relative to the knuckle. It should not have any slop.

Thanks for the advise Aaron. I went with your earlier recommendation on the bushings and ordered urethane.

Will await the tracking number on the new order.

Thanks again.
