hey sir, need to know what parts are still availible? i found some unpleasant stuff in my system the other day and its time to replace it all. you already gave me the price on the radiator and i had a heart attack. what about the hoses that go to the back and all that stuff? also any tips on getting the nasty out and maybe saving me some monies? i think there is some rust in there haha. thanks aaron

I got curious and looked into the shop manual.
It doesn't say anything about radiator flush products...
Just drain and refill procedures. Any opinions on
using a flush product before drain ?
Or drain/ flush / refill ?
I haven't flushed any radiators in a long time...

The prices will be a little out of date, but just to get you started, most of the hoses are listed here:
All hoses, pipes, etc to redo coolant system including rad

There will be minor differences in a couple of the hoses since your car is earlier than the one in that thread. Still, that will get you close. Let me know if you want current pricing on anything in particular. As far as I know, everything you are likely to need is still available.

I would try a chemical flush before anything else, then see how you feel after the system has been cleaned out. Just follow the directions on whatever you use. It will be very important to rince the system thoroughly after the flush so that you don't end up with nasty chemicals floating around your cooling system. After the flush, drain the nasty stuff out from every port (radiator, engine, and pipes under gas tank). Then fill the system with clean water and run the engine with the heater on until the thermostat opens, let it cool off, and drain from every point again. Following that, you can probably fill it with fresh water and drain from each port without running the engine, then fill with coolant and water and burp as usual.

Obviously, I am a stickler for thorough flushes. The idea of leaving garbage in any system just does not sit well with me.

I am planning on ordering all new parts, and based off that list and a few other threads I figure it will run you about 800 +- a little.

But thats for this list....

16405-16020 $18.79 Reserve tank cap sub-assy.
16401-63010 $11.08 Coolant filler cap

Total Cost $764.98

Thus far thats my listing of the parts that make up a mk1 cooling system (at least for my car) As aaron already mentioned there may be/are differences.

FYI i own a 88 na and the posting of the thread aaron mentioned earlier was for my car this listing is those parts plus a few others.

*** Please note that all these prices listed above are old quotes these may not be the current prices. Please check with aaron for part availability and cost. ***

Yeah, my thought is this: Use it!

Pre-emptively replacing everything in the cooling system is an awfully expensive fix for a problem you probably don't actually have. Let me know what you find and we'll price out whatever you need to replace.

He beat me to it, I was going to say the same thing, the only reason I am replacing my entire system is because my hoses crunch if you squeeze them and the hoses/other parts of the system are caked in rust (so much/long so that you can barely scrape it off) plus I will have spare cash and it gets really hot here in az the last thing you want is a cooling problem.

The list I provided is just a list of part numbers/prices that I have gathered that makeup the parts for my cooling system so I know what kinda damage I am looking at when I order parts lol.

side note: I was shocked at the price of the Reserve tank cap sub-assy. figured those would cost alot more...
