AW11 4AGE Engine Rebuild

I was wondering if Toyota ever made a specific engine-rebuild kit, or if I'd have to do it part by part? I read through the first six pages and saw plenty of individual engine component pricing, but nothing specific. Could you help me out on this?

No sir. It seems as though they expect their engines to outlast the rest of the car in most cases, and they simply don't offer rebuild kits.

That's exactly how you'd have to do it. Sometimes it makes sense and sometimes it's cost-prohibitive.

There are engine gasket sets, of course, and they include valve stem seals. Piston rings also come in engine sets. All the other bearings, pistons, etc are sold individually.

Thanks, man. I assume you're the guy I would talk to to order those things, then? Can I get a quote on the engine gasket set, for now? I'll have more things to order after tomorrow, I imagine.

Yup, either me or Tracy (FrunkMonkey). Just give us a call if/when you want to place an order.

Sure thing. The gasket set does not include grommets for the valve cover nuts for some reason, so I will list those as well, along with some FIPG (Formed In Place Gasket) sealant for the oil pan and cam bearing caps:

04111-16076 - $222.64 - Gasket set, engine overhaul
90210-06013 - $0.72 - Washer, seal (x8 = $5.76)
00295-00103 - $10.69 - FIPG oil pan sealant

These are written up on quote number 50986 for now. We can add to the quote as necessary and then roll it into an invoice when you are ready to order. Thanks!

Well. Turns out I'll be needing a quote on pretty much everything, if you can get it. Pistons, valves, cams, cam followers, cam gears, piston rings, etc. Pretty much every internal mechanical piece. I'll be editing this later today with a more complete list. I have part numbers. they'll be up in a moment.

Actually, if it's OK with you, I'd rather not work off your part numbers. It is easier, and far more reliable, for me to get part numbers than to confirm the ones you provide.

Now, before we get involved, I am a little concerned. Camshafts, cam followers, valves, and cam gears are not typically replaced. They simply do not wear enough to even worry about. If your engine is so roached that the cams need to be replaced, throw it away and buy a different engine! You will spend many thousands of dollars buying parts that you shouldn't need, building an engine that is worth far less than the parts you put into it, let alone the labor and time involved.

If you are asking for those parts because your machinist suggested replacing it all, then as harsh as this sounds, he has no familiarity with import engines built in the last twenty years. Get your parts out of his hands and find another machine shop!

Good advice, sir. Thank you. I actually did that when he suggested I purchase a new block off of him for the price of 7500$ As of now I have ordered a lightly used JDM 4AGZE, tranny, and ECU for about 1600$. So, now the only part I need from you is an ignitor. Thank you very, very much for some very sound advice though.

Wow. Seriously? He must really have figured you for a sucker. That's impressively viscous.

Sure thing, just let me know what the application is. I'm assuming it's for the GZE.

No worries. I hate to sound so negative about things like this, but I would much rather give you the ugly truth than see you get involved in a real losing battle.

Yeah, I didn't know the guy very well, so it wasn't a personal insult or anything. And yep, the ignitor is for the GZE, but I won't need it for almost a month.

he wanted you to pay 7500 dollars for a used block?!?!?!?!?! you can buy a blacktop for $1000!

youre in a good place here. if something seems a little steep it may not be the best price (though a lot of times it is) so look it up on ebay, or look up related parts and if you cant find it ASK US! also call the dealer. those prices are usually more expensive, but theyre GOOD parts. do important stuff from the dealer (i,e. brakes) if youre going to do dealer anything.

I agree, but Scott, I am the dealer. We are a real Toyota dealership, selling genuine Toyota parts. The big differences between us and any random Toyota dealer down the street is that we know MR2s well enough to pick parts correctly (I own an MR2, and the parts manager owns two), we actually stock MR2 parts, and we give a discount on those parts to any MR2 owner. When you are in the Lithia Toyota sub-forum, you are effectively standing at my parts counter.

In other words, if you need "dealer parts", that's why we're here

i didnt mean to insult the dealership, because if i had the cash id probably replace all mt calipers, brake hoses, brake lines, struts, springs (with trd), and all my gaskets through the dealer. the only problem is i really dont have that kind of money so i do a lot of shopping around, thats all im saying. i love dealer prts, its just anything but the dealer parts i already have on the car (factory) are too expensive for me.

auto dont=a no-no. (except for crap like spark plugs)
twosrus- ok prices and ok stuff.
dealer- BEST stuff
