Smokey smokey :/

Hey aaron.

I've got some white smoke that I dreaded seeing, thank god its a 4 banger.
I've done alot of checks since it was going white to black and smelled super rank. It has come down to checking the head gasket now that the bad old gas is out and its got some clean gas and is still smoking white.

I plan to pull the head tomorrow morning to check.

(thought I'd share because there always seems to be great info chimed in on your thread here)
could I get a quote on a silvertop head gasket, and head bolts?

if you need part numbers lmk, i figured these would be readily on hand.

Thanks
Ryan

The numbers aren't right in my pocket, but there's always www.toyodiy.com for things like this, no problem. The head gasket is indeed 11115-16111. If you can budget for it, I would strongly suggest a complete engine gasket set, since you'll want to replace a lot of other gaskets at the same time, and we can't get most individual 20V gaskets outside of the kit.

04111-16211 - $223.13 - gasket set, engine overhaul, 20V Silvertop
11115-16111 - $35.98 - Head gasket, 20V Blacktop and Silvertop

These are saved on quote number 51052 for the time being. Unfortunately, I can't get the head bolts. I have seen some references to other Toyota head bolts being acceptable substitutes, but I don't remember where exactly. It was definitely somewhere on one of the MR2 forums.

Unfortunately, yes. Most of the proprietary 20V and Gen3 gaskets are not available seperately in the US, and this is unfortunately one of them. The part number is correct, by the way, but it's just not something we can get.

That is why I strongly, strongly recommend buying the engine overhaul gasket set if you have an engine that isn't supported in the USA. It includes all those specific gaskets that you can't get on their own.

Electrical tape is for electrical work, and RTV is for... well... basically, I can only think of a handful of occasions where any sort of RTV or sealant is the correct product. Often, it's just a half-arsed repair attempt by someone who couldn't be bothered to do the job correctly. If you do have to make your own gasket, I would suggest using gasket paper, which will be available at any decent parts store.

Sorry to be so blunt. I'm on a "do it right" kick right now, having seen a few too many really bad repair jobs lately and not wanting that cycle to continue.

oh wait wait wait, i for some reason assumed it wouldnt be in the gasket kit!! i'm sorry i dont like halfass either, it was more of being backed into a corner, and thinking of how to repair the plastic piece. i guess super glue would have been an idea too

Oh, no, it's in there. Toyota's engine overhaul gasket sets are pretty comprehensive. Here's a pic of the silvertop set...

Everything inside the box marked 04111 is included, except the obvious hard parts like the oil pump pickup, etc.

i'm looking at the head gasket that it came iwht, theres no real "blown" parts, but there was some kind of paste underneath the gasket that i had to scrape off. do the oem gaskets need sealant or adhesive? and could this cause them to fail?

with cometec and the metal trd gasket, idk i'm a little skittish to use the oem head gasket again, since there was no obvious reason for it to blow, yet be blown (if it makes sense).

if the oem gasket is infact a decent gasket, then i will begin my saving up to buy this kit + head studs!

thanks aaron

There's no paste or sealant, but there are sections that are rubberized, or coated with a silicone product, and the main gasket is typically a graphite composite piece that can leave a gray film on surfaces that it touches.

The engine probably overheated, or may have been severely out of tune. The OEM gasket is more than adequate under anything remotely approaching normal conditions. Cometic may be available, but TRD... that four month wait time seems to discourage a lot of people.

oh no..i know what the gasket should be like....this was paste..this was like gross, it covered parts of the coolant passages, it was gunked up around the holes in the head gasket for the water passages, and where the water came up on the block surface from taking the head off was dissovling into the water..this was definatly like a paste

Makes me wonder if it wasn't just the usual solids that accumulate in an unmaintained cooling system. They can get really, really nasty.

yes but would those solids evenly coat the entire mating surface of the block? I can see on a saturn 4cyl, because the water jacket is huge, but the st has very small passageways, i mean theres just no way...i've already cleaned most of it up but i'll see if i can get you some pics, its shiny silver and looks like lead paste
