It's ok to drive the car like that, but it wore a small hole in one of the plastic engine under covers, and it drove me absolutely crazy. You might be able to pull it off as a unit (which I think can be done, as it's part of the timing belt replacement procedure) by removing the right rear wheel and unbolting the whole balancer. That might actually be easier than what I did, which was to unbolt the starboard engine mount and leverage the ring out while I had an assistant pry on the engine in the opposite direction. I still had to jack the car up, and it was a significant pain, lol.
The worst part is I had to rebuild my distributor recently, and now the engine needs retimed. I'll have to either replace the pulley or try to find TDC and make new marks on the alternator ring. But I digress . . .

hey got a quick question for ya! the outer ring on my crank pulley came loose as yours did, how did you get it out? and i assume it is safe to drive like this? i need to drive it but wasnt sure its my daily driver so i kinda need to get it out of there and or put up with the racket and leave it? thanks in advance!! oh yeah its 91 same as yours.
