FS: 1988 MR2 T-Top, Automatic, Repair or Donor Car
Vehicle Location: Monmouth, OR
Vehicle Price: Make Offer
Vehicle Odometer: 145000

I've been a long time MR2 Owner and fan, but unfortunately no longer have the time or energy to continue repairing/working on this car.

For sales is a 1988 Toyota MR2 T-Top with Automatic Transmission. Here are the additional specs...with pictures to follow later.

-
  • Needs New Head Gasket, may possibly need straightened heads, I haven't had it torn down, so I don't know just yet what may be involved.
  • Car starts, runs, accelerates, runs rough and idles erratically, and shortly overheats) within 15 minutes...again, due to head gasket.
  • T-Tops do not leak, and both shades are with the car.
  • 1.6L Twin Cam - not supercharged
  • Is equipped with ECT - I left it on all the time and it had a fair amount of zip for an automatic
  • Front fenders, hood, and doors are all in good shape, no rust or dents.
  • Brand new rear tires (I put on new BFG's and the gasket blew the next day)
  • American Racing wheels with locking wheel caps and lugs - fair condition (some pitting on the finish...they're old)
  • Seats are in good condition, carpet is worn but not worn through
  • One year ago, the following repairs were done at the shop:Injectors have been pressure flushed, new alternator, cooling system flushed, new rear calipers and e-brake cable (Approx $1300 total repairs)
  • Right rear quarter has the common rust-out in the wheel well
  • Left rear quarter is junk...I bought it from a kid who backed into the driver's quarter with a pickup...so the quarter is completely useless.
  • Upon purchasing, installed two new front struts myself
  • Shortly after purchase...installed new in tank fuel pump myself
  • Recently "refurbished" headlight and wiper switches (they weren't working correctly so I disassembled, cleaned, and straightened the modules and contact points) and they now work fine

This is a great car for someone who's got the time, tools, and know-how, or who's looking for a good donor car. As the vehicle is semi-disabled, buyer must arrange transportation from the vehicle's location (it will not make it on a short transfer without overheating)

Email me with any questions...I'm happy to answer. Make me an offer, and we're both in business!

Photos and details

As an update...the vehicle may or may not come with the new rear tires. I may be able to trade them with the retailer towards tires on a new vehicle. If new tires are desired, price for tires is $65.00/tire (what I paid).

I took some photos and have some updated info on odometer reading. Actual miles are 154000. Here is a list of repairs preformed in the past 18 months (good parts here). I have more pics, but couldn't attach them all. Email me if you would like to see them all, or if you need a pic of something specific.
  • Tires - BFG Traction T/A 185/60 R14, BRAND NEW (installed at 153794 miles)
  • K&N Air Filter (with warranty paperwork)
Repairs below this point were completed at 139,580 (9/27/05)
  • Fuel injection cleaning (high pressure) cleans screens, decarbonize of valve train, combustion chamber, 02 sensors, and manual cleaning of throttle plate.
  • Replaced rear brake calipers (both sides) and adjusted cable
  • Cooling system flush
  • Turn Signal switch replaced
  • Weather stripping on drivers door (stop leak)
  • Repair parking brake cable
  • Replaced alternator

Before I purchased the vehicle...the following were done on 6/21/96
  • Replaced 4 pistons
  • Rings
  • Rod Bearings
  • Main Bearings
  • Oil Pump
  • Timing Belt
  • Water Pump
  • Fuel Filter
  • Plugs, cap, rotor (since been replaced again)
  • Surfaced head
  • Valve job
  • Wrist pins fitted
  • Crank polished, gaskets

As mentioned in initial post, I also installed a new fuel pump (we all know how much of a joy that is) and replaced the front struts.
