Fully restored 1989 MR2SC in SC for sale
Vehicle Location: Greenville, SC Vehicle Price: serious offers only Vehicle Odometer: 133000 Hi All,
My 1989 Supercharged is for sale. I put together a web page with photos and all the mods I've done so that's probably the easiest way to get all the information out: http://nedved.com/mr2 In short I had this car FULLY restored back in about 2003. Full paint job with modern paint and clear coat from a real body shop (one associated with our local Honda dealer who I really like their work) and lots of trim pieces replaced with original Toyota parts from my local dealer. I moved out of the country in 2005 and I had planned on bringing my car with me but now I find out that with all the mods it will be too hard to get it registered here in Europe, so I have to sell it and buy another one over here to start over. This car was absolutely perfect a few years ago -- better than showroom actually because the modern paint is much better than the original 80's paint. It's gotten a few dings and scratches on it since, and a few things have gotten broken and need a bit of attention, but a little TLC and this car would once again be the best MR2SC in the country probably. Look at the pics, read about the mods, and email me if you have any questions. Best regards, David |

Well I guess I am making it hard on people not giving any idea. How about for anybody who's a real MR2 enthusiast I guess I'd be happy to get the price of the paint job alone out of the car: about $6800 if I remember right. Consider everything else: the car, the brand new competition clutch and lightened flywheel (less than 500 miles on them unfortunately), both sets of wheels and tires, etc... consider it all tossed in for the price of 1 professional full paintjob.
What do you think? |

Well, there's actually 2 things that come into play coming up with that number. First off that number was actually after me talking the guy down a good bit off the book cost because a.) he was doing the whole car and b.) he had just done a really good job on my wife's accord so I was a repeat customer. I think $6800 was 15 or 20% off the full book price if I remember right. The other thing is that insurance was paying for the door and fender because they got scraped up, so I didn't pay the full $6800 out of pocket -- insurance paid about $2400 of it (well I paid for it in premiums after that believe me!) I thought long and hard about it before doing it, but the car was already paid off and I figured that I couldn't get a better car for 5 grand than a fully restored MR2SC! The damage to the door and fender were in a parking lot, and were fully repaired by the body shop. It really is something to see. It's not perfect any longer since it has been a few years, but it's still VERY nice. That's why I was saying better than showroom -- as I understand it these cars didn't have clearcoat back in 1989, which is why they all have paint that's faded to some extent or another. Sorry you don't like the cold air intake, I thought it was really cool. I was going for an almost stock look: I specifically asked that the badges not be put back on (people were always seeing the "Supercharger" sticker and wanting to race, plus I hated the chickenhawk on the hood), but cold air intake was the one concession I made to having it externally visible how modded it is. Now without the SC badging people have no idea what just blew them off the road! I really should have gotten the competition clutch earlier -- the stock clutch had started slipping pretty much right after turning up the boost. It lasted a really long time, but I had no idea how wicked hard it pulled without that slipping clutch. I really wish I could import it and take it to the Nurburgring, but alas... |

what's the fuss?
I like the quarter intake. (used a naca duct, right?) was it ever plumbed and used/raced? I started to customize my street/time trials car in 1989 as soon as i raced it. are there any custom mr2's out there? |

Glad you like it. It's not plumbed because the short direct air intake for the engine is directly behind it, so no need. An no, the car has never been raced. The car is going to the shop in the next week or two to get the minor issues fixed. I'll get one last drive around in May then will start pushing harder to sell it. It'll be going onto ebay if nobody in the MR2 community is interested. David |

I think mine qualifies as custom... but it matches on both sides... symmetry is our friend people... well mine anyway, you folks do as you please, but even the single-side stock vent drives me nuts so we made our own custom matching pair. and then the passenger side vent... Not trying to thread hijack, just showing there are some "custom" deuces out there that don't just have an NACA duct on the side. Some guy had one local and the car was beautiful... aside from the duct, which is definately not my taste, but whatever. Most folks aren't into the NACA ducts, but clearly some folks are because they chop up their quarter panel to add them. You'll probably find someone who won't care or even that likes them, but I know some folks literally cringe when they see those cut into the side. I'm never planning on selling my car, so I don't really care if some folks don't like my scoops... but I've had lots of interest in producing these for sale, so I guess some folks like them! Body alterations are a personal choice... just have to remember potential buyers might not like them. I did a custom decklid too, and we'll be making a custom front airdam soon. Mine has no badges whatsoever other than the angry chicken badge and two additional angry chicken badges on the front quarter panels, doesn't even have mudflaps right now, but most car people still know exactly what it is and even get the year close. A mailman knew what it was instantly (and loved it). I'm not going to chime in on the paint... other than to say we've got a paint/body shop and that price is way out of line for what we'd charge, but I know two shops locally that do charge around that much for old muscle cars or crazy custom jobs. Our shop tended to do a lot of work for collectors and muscle car guys... a few racers too, but we just closed down shop and are catchinig up on our projects for a year or two (maybe longer, lol). Saw that the bidding is ended... congrats on a sale perhaps?? |

Looks nice, just enuff custom not to overcome the car design.
How about a shot of that custome cover? Last edited by mr2tim; 10-27-2008 at 01:22 PM.. |

Let's see... here is a decent shot of it.
![]() and lastly, a shot from the side so you can see the profile of the lid... If you want to see more pictures of the custom work (scoops and decklid) you can check them out HERE ... also have an engine bay shot of the pipe where we made the driver's side vent functional (haven't made our cold air box yet, but it is piped for one). Also have a couple pictures of the shop if you're interested in seeing where we do the work on this thing . I don't feel bad about thread hijacking since this one seems to have sold I guess?? You've got a lot of time/work in that car mr2tim! We're planning to toy with wings and make our own as well... looking for functionality with our body mods of course , we're trying to stick with the square body lines of the car for the most part. I've got a big bonus in that Dad is a design engineer and once we come up with a design he turns it into a blueprint and go from there. |
