FS: 1987 AW11 T-top
Vehicle Location: San Jose, CA
Vehicle Price: $1,800
Vehicle Odometer: ?

I'm selling my 87 MR2, I'd like to see it go to a good home. I'm asking $1,800 for it. I purchased it as a lien sale from a tow yard. It had been towed and the owner never picked it up. Mileage is unknown, the instrument cluster that came with it is not original. It has a salvaged title, but has been salvaged sine 1991 and the chassis is perfectly straight. I have the latest alignment printout from the suspension work I did a few months ago.

I replaced some body panels and redid the entire suspension. The tires and brakes on the car, as well as the hydraulics are good. The engine runs good and I wouldn't hesitate to drive it anywhere if needed. The transmission is good, but 3rd gear synchro is showing its age, sometimes it crunches a bit on the shift. It has done that since I bought it a few years ago, and it's been my daily driver with no troubles. After I replaced all the body panels, the car was in great shape with no major dents. But it was hit in a parking lot on the driver's front fender, and the fender that was put on to replace it is only temporary, and is faded with a dent. I have a straight fender to install that needs to be painted. A/C is charged with R12 and works good, but there's some dirt in the clutch and it makes noise when off sometimes after use. All manual options. Here's a list of everything I've done.
  • Replace airbox with cone filter
  • Custom Magnaflow exhaust
  • TRD QuickShift Kit short-throw shifter
  • TRD strut tops, 4 corners
  • TRD suspension bushing kit, complete
  • Toyota factory front strut tower brace
  • Tokico Illumina 5-way adjustable struts
  • Suspension Techniques springs
  • Suspension Techniques front and rear adjustable anti-sway bars
  • European-market front turn signals/driving lamps
  • K.D. Garage Buddy Club Replica front lip featuring carbon fiber center section
  • 85-86 tail light conversion
  • black vinyl headlamp covers, good paint underneath

Other than that, she's stock down to the blown out stock tape deck. But I have a lot of extra parts that will be included. I have a full set of extra wheels. Extra interior trim pieces and a good dashboard (the dashboard in it is in good shape, but has some small cracks) will be included. I do have the stock 87+ tail lights. Also I have all the parts necessary to convert this car to a supercharged model, including the engine block, head, supercharged engine wiring harness, air intake ducting, supercharger, intercooler, etc. I also have some mods included for the supercharged engine such as a crank pulley to overdrive the supercharger, good for about 13 PSI. The engine requires reassembly. But if you don't want to rebuild the engine, I also have a complete non-supercharged engine that I can include in good shape for an extra $200, you could use the supercharger equipment on this engine if you'd like. Everything is included.

I've been doing MR2s for almost 8 years and I'm just looking for a change of venue. I will gladly answer any questions regarding this sale.

The car is located in San Jose in the Willow Glen/Cambrian area. I can be reached, preferably by PM, or by phone at 408-828-7532. If I don't answer, please leave a message.

These pics are not current. I will post current pictures when I get home to my camera and car.

I am very interested in your car but I just have a few questions.

How extensive is the damage to the front of the car from the accident that you mentioned?

How much wear and tear on all of the suspension upgrades?

I live in Washington so I won't be able to check out the car in person, but I would like to see the pictures that you mentioned you'd be posting.

Thanks,
pat

The damage to the front of the car was very minor. It was low speed in a parking lot. Basically, the wheel arch was pushed in beyond repair. The fender that I put on also has a dent on the arch, but is in much better shape than the fender that got hit. Unfortunately, it's a bit faded as is and the paint doesn't blend well. I think a good buffing would help. The fender I have to replace it is straight, but is black and needs to be sanded and painted.

The suspension has less than 10k miles on it, and hasn't seen any abuse. I haven't been able to drive this car like it's set up to be driven, part of the reason I'm selling.

I'm very interested in buying this car. I just have a few more questions.

Do the T-tops leak?

What are those two marks on the rear bumper?

What is that antenna off of?

I'm going to need to talk to my friends and see if anyone is interested in driving down with me. What is your timeline for getting rid of this awesome car?

Yes, the T-tops do leak. Sometimes it is worse than others. Sometimes they don't leak at all. I use the tops often, so it seems sometimes they seat better in the seals than others. Regardless, I tend to not drive it much in the rain. It can get pretty exciting with the rear sway bar with wet pavement. But it's easily controllable if you drive it calm when it's raining, not like it's scary.

The marks on the bumpers are paint chips, both bumpers need to be repainted. I was going to have the whole car done at once when I was ready. I also have a replica factory graphics kit that I was going to apply at that time, as well. That will also come with the car.

I have no idea where the antenna came from, it was on the car when I bought it. I figure the stock power antenna failed many years ago.

I'm going to look at the price of plane tickets down there and see if I can't get someone to help me out by going dow there.

I'm not sure how long it will take me to set something up so I was wondering what you thought about this.

Thanks

I think it's a lot of commitment for someone that far out of state. What if you don't like it when you see it? How are you going to transport all the parts that it comes with? If you don't want the extra stuff, I'll gladly keep it and sell it seperately, lord knows I can make more cash. But please understand that the price reflects the car and the equipment on it, the extra parts are truly just that, extra.

I admit it is somewhat of a risk for me but I'm enough of an MR2 fan that the only risk I see in this is any mis-representation of the car on your part, and I don't see this as an issue with your long posting history on the MR2 boards.

What are the parts that you mention as coming with the car? I know of the front quarter panel and the sticker set. What else would you be including?

I completely agree that the car is worth the $1800 alone so anything extra I would take as I could transport it. I may be able to round up a pickup truck for the drive down.

What is your reason for selling this car? What is the condition of the clutch? What are your thoughts on the internal condition of the transmission and engine (I know you mentioned third gear pop out)? I saw that you purchased some solid motor mount inserts a while back, are those installed on the car?

Thank you,
pat

I haven't misrepresented the car in any way. My concern is that the pictures make the paint look really good. The body, sans driver's fender, is damn straight, but there are scratches and marks on the paint of the car. I'm sure a good buff would clean it up, but ultimately a fresh coat is what she needs. I will wash the car and take high-res close up shots for you either this afternoon or tomorrow, depending if I can step away from work. There are a few known problems with the car.
  • First, cylinder one is a little down on compression. It runs fine, but it's not making the power it should be.
  • 3rd gear does not pop-out, none of the gears do. The 2nd-to-3rd shift is crunchy sometimes, especially on a cold tranny
  • It has your typical 4A-GE oil leaks
  • Speedo works, but needle is bouncy. I think I have a new cable, but I'm not sure, so I didn't list it below.
  • The anti-sway bar endlinks are pillow-ball style on the front and are noisy. The structural suspension is 100% tight. Brand new rear ball joints less than 500 miles ago. (replaced due to cracked dust boots.)
  • AC is charged with R12 and blows cold, but there is dirt in the compressor clutch, and sometimes it drags from the dirt after use. I was just gonna cut the belt to the AC compressor and call it a day, but with Summer comming up, I was gonna dissasemble and clean the clutch instead.
  • The thermostat went out and I replaced it with one from my local parts store. It works, but not as good as Toyota, and it takes a bit longer than it should to warm up completely.

There might be a few other minor issues, nothing serious. I would like to note that the mileage of the timing belt is unknown. I believe it is pretty fresh, but I will pull off the cover and inspect it for you if you are serious about buying it and driving it to Washington.
There are lots of parts that I'm giving away with this sale. Here's a list of everything I can think of but I'm certain there's more:
  • GZE swap
    • USDM GZE longblock (was running good at disassembly, but should be bored with oversize pistons for reassembly. Good compression and no burning oil. I am also offering a 99% complete 4A-GE for an extra $200)
    • USDM GZE head
    • 1988 GZE wiring harness
    • SC12 supercharger
    • 2 GZE ECUs, 1 manual and 1 automatic
    • Gruntbox
    • Nevo 175mm crank pulley
    • stock AW11 intercooler
    • GZE AFM
    • GZE intake piping
  • black driver's side fender
  • excellent dashboard
  • good center console/armrest
  • black radio/heater surround/bezel (car was originally blue interior, this is the last blue piece)
  • extra OEM strut bars
  • extra High & Tight rear anti-sway bar
  • extra Frunk trim
  • extra interior trim
  • 4 extra "triangle" wheels
  • extra exhaust, B-pipe to tip

Basically, all my spare MR2 parts are free with this purchase. My reason for selling is simple, but you guys may think I'm an idiot. I am a Volkswagen fan. I always have been and always will be. I only got in to MR2s almost 8 years ago when my Aunt gave me my first 86 for free. It has been fun, very fun in fact, but I'm just really bored with them. I'm going to keep my Supra, and otherwise I'm moving on.

I am saving for a black W12 Phaeton, and I want to buy a late 60's Type 3 square or notch as a daily driver. It's that simple. No more room for MR2s. I know I can get a lot of cash if I part this out and sell everything seperately, but I don't want to do that. I want someone as enthusiastic as i once was to finish my project, and finish building this bad-ass supercharged MR2 with wicked suspension, and enjoy the car as I am no longer capable of doing.

Yes, the extra engine is available with the car for an extra $200. Nothing is yet for sale seperately.
