Want To Buy-Clean Mk1 w/Auto
Vehicle Location: Phoenix, AZ Vehicle Price: Depends Vehicle Odometer: Not too high Looking for a CLEAN MK1 w/automatic trans. as near stock as possible. Please no rust buckets, high mileage cars that need lots of repairs. Minor repairs are fine. A/C must work well or be easily fixed. Prefer white car, but will consider all except black. Salvage title OK, if car has been repaired VERY well--it will be examined.

How soon are you wanting this? I ask because I'm rebuilding an 86 hardtop white car with original paint, a clean title and I know where an auto transmission and computer are so I could go that route when I rebuild the motor and put it back together if you were interested. I'm going to be asking a reasonable price for the car, nothing outrageous, but I'm planning on putting this thing together with A/C, new bushings, shocks, ball joints and tie rod ends if they look old at all, a rebuild on the motor, I've got a set of 15 inch ICW 5 spokes that are vintage old school and would look great on the car that I'm going to clean up for it. It has something in the range of 150k on the chassis I think and honestly the car was raced for a while but I've got almost everything already in hand to put it back to stock street specs. Let me know if this sounds interesting to you. I work on mk1's and have 3 right now and a parts car. My dad also does paint and body work and he could probably touch up the front fender and straighten it out... that's the only accident reported on the carfax and it was super minor and was never repaired it was such a small crease. I can send pictures of the car basicallly as it sits now... I have the interior pulled so I can put the under dash stuff back in. My buddy is a good mechanic as well and might could help me get the car together quicker if you are interested. I've taken a few weeks off to recoupe from some surgery but I'm starting to get back to normal and I'm itching to get back on MR2 work! I've got a nice interior for the car, black with white/black seats, center console, good used black carpet, pretty nice set of manual door panels (manual options car). Think the dash doesn't even have cracks (maybe one if it has any). I've got the A/C and heat unit with climate control for the car too. I've been kinda picky about what stuff I keep for the car as I've been stripping parts cars (6 of them now) and I keep the best stuff for this car. Has good rear window trim and TOYOTA visor as well. Car will look really nice when we finish it up and should be mechanically sound. I'm gonna kick myself for selling it too because I'm determined to have myself a hardtop sometime here! If you'll give me a bit here I'll try to post up some pictures on my website of the car in progress so you and others can keep tabs on the project as it goes.

Sounds interesting! I'm in no rush. Back ~ 1987 I rented a brand new MK1 for a long trip ~2,000 miles. The car was great. If pushed hard in high speed curves, it "floundered" a little when it hit small bumps, but otherwise was a great ride.
BTW, a couple of years ago I bought a 60,000 mile salvage-titled 1990 Toyota Supra turbo from eBay for $3,000, and it's been a great car--except I had to replace the head gasket after ~ a year. Would never do it again unless I pulled the whole motor out. All that leaning screwed up a nerve in my leg, and it hurt for a year! I'm getting too old for that stuff now (68). Still have it, but it only gets 20 mpg on high test, so I thought a nice light early MR2 might get ~30 on reg. gas. Last edited by Benesesso; 09-11-2009 at 05:19 AM.. |

You're right about gas mileage... I average between 32 and 28 depending on how hard I drive my 88 N/A 5 speed with only a few minor mods and I run regular gas. I'd guess similar mileage out of a mostly stock 86 with auto transmission! I've got my page finished for the car but am waiting for a password to reset so you can see what I've got and a little bit of what has been done. I don't have many pictures of the work I noticed, but think I have some on my camera... I'm also keeping a word document on what I do as I go along. At least I'm trying to keep track of most of what I do, I keep missing a few things here and there but it is pretty comprehensive so the new owner will know most everything that has been done to the car recently. I thought I'd mention what I was doing since you wanted white and auto cars are a little hard to come by. Since I knew where a transmission was in good shape I thought I could possibly go that route. Also my buddy's girlfriend was interested in it if we went auto so that might be my best bet anyway. She has a nice 535 they're fixing up so she may not even be interested anymore. Plus I know for a fact that auto transmission is shifting good as I know the guy that is daily driving it now! He's pulling it to put the supercharged motor and transmission from this 86 into that 86.
I had an 87 Supra N/A for a few months... it was in rough shape and had high miles but I really liked the car and hope to track down a clean N/A 5 speed car one day when I have the time/money to toy with it. I sold it and bought my 88 Land Cruiser to haul parts in and so I could tow some stuff . |

The guy I bought my one mr2 had an auto 87 for sale too and he said he could only get 28 mpgs. The only way I get 28 is if I beat the car and run each gear out. I didnt buy the automatic one because I dont believe in automatic sports cars. Good luck with finding one.

Ok, finally got those pics up of the hardtop I'm redoing. I know where at least 2 if not 3 auto transmissions and setups are right now, so I could go that route if you were pretty seriously interested. You can see some pics of before and early in the process on my website 1986 Toyota MR2 Hardtop ex
Don't let the early pics scare you, I chucked anything bad interior wise and I've got a full NICE interior for it at this point. I sell used mk1 parts and I've kept the best of everything I run across for this car. It isn't a power option car (which your wife might not love... then again it doesn't take a lot of effort to lean across such a small car so she might not mind). I was planning to put A/C on the car as well of course. Just let me know if it seems interesting to you. |

Yup, nice find! S/C autos aren't that common, neither are Supercharged cars in general, so good pickup there! Enjoy it (share pics when you get it... always fun to drool over other mk1's!!)!!
