86 MR2 with 87 Parts Car
The time has come to let go of my baby. I’ve owned this car for about 3 years now, and ever since coming to college and getting a different car to drive daily I haven’t been able to give it the attention it deserves. It is an 86 model with removable sunroof.
![]() The car is tons of fun to drive, and I love it to death but I feel like it needs an owner who can work on it and drive it, so I’m selling it. And as an extra special bonus, I’m throwing in an MR2 parts car. That’s two MR2s for the price of one! The car got a complete suspension overhaul about 100 miles ago. The suspension hasn’t even fully settled yet. All new front and rear polyurethane bushings, Toyota Racing Development springs which should drop the car about 2 more inches once they settle, new Tokico Illumina 5-way adjustable shocks, new ball-joints and tie rod ends, and a stock alignment. I took the stock front strut tower bar from the 87 parts car and added it as well. Being an 86, the car does not come stock with a rear swaybar, but it is an early 86 model so it has tabs for the endlinks already on the strut housing so it would be a simple bolt-on affair to add one. Brakes are good except that the passenger side rear caliper needs to be replaced, because the bleed valve sheared off and I broke an EZ-out bit off in it trying to get it out. It holds pressure now and brakes, just not at 100 percent. Rotors and pads are in good shape. I have a set of braided steel brake lines that have not been installed included with the car. Tires have decent tread left on them. The wheels were powdercoated black about 2 years ago and are holding up great. ![]() ![]() The seats and door panels have been reupholstered in high-quality vinyl. I paid over $800 getting this done and it makes the interior look much nicer than the stock cloth. Seats have perforated vinyl down the middle and on the headrest. Carpet was replaced last winter. I completely stripped the interior and laid down 3 layers of Fat Mat sound insulation. The rear firewall insulation fabric was left in place. I also built speaker mounts for the 6x9 Pioneers in the rear. No radio is included, but any DIN size stereo will fit fine. I have replaced the stereo surround trim, the ashtray and the shiftboot with unfaded pieces. The seats are not stained, it’s only water. Being an older car there are some faded pieces and the center console armrest is off, but I have it and it just needs to be straightened out and reupholstered. There is a small crack in the dash pad that is common on MR2s. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The engine in the 86 now is the engine from the 87 car, with about 108k on it. The engine runs but has a hard time starting, because the throttle position sensor is out of adjustment I believe. With the TPS unhooked the car runs rich, but still pulls nicely. There is a 2 ¼” exhaust with a straight-thru Magnaflow on the car now, but it has a flange that bolts up to the stock exhaust downpipe for easy removal. Internally the engine is completely stock. The speedometer is off about 10 MPH, and I suspect it has a bent speedometer cable. ![]() As for the exterior, the car was originally black but painted a nice bright red by the previous owner. The red paint is flaking on the rear bumper. There is only rust in the driver’s rear quarter panel as far as I know. The front bumper cover is cracked in the middle of the lip, and the bottom of the passenger side front fender is bent in some. The parts car has a good passenger front fender on it. The car has the clear plastic Toyota visor and exterior C-pillar trim in good condition. The windows are tinted and in good condition. The windshield is new. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The parts car is an 87 removable sunroof also. The taillights and side air scoop are in great condition and look better than the 86 stuff I think. Most of the interior is still there, and it is stuffed full of all the spare parts I have for the cars. I mean, it’s a ridiculous amount of spares, and you could probably make back some decent money selling some of the pieces, but I don’t have the time to do that with school starting back and work. ![]() ![]() ![]() The car is located in Cynthiana, Kentucky, which is about 30 minutes from Lexington. This would make a great project car or even a daily driver with a bit of work. If your not interested in taking both cars, we might be able to work something out, but I’d really like everything to go together. I’d like to get $2200 for everything, but I’m perfectly willing to accept offers. |

removable sunroof and 6x9s in rear
Hello!
I was wondering if you could help me by telling me how to take my sunroof out of my '87. I undid/released the retainer clip on the left side and tried to pull it up and out towards the rear of the car, but it just will not come out. Also, how do those 6x9s sound behind you? I bet they sound good and it is loud in there! Thanks! |
