Welcome aboard! You probably have the 200 mm clutch set as you suspect. You are also correct that a 212 mm clutch will work as long as you mate it to the proper 212 mm flywheel.
The flywheels are physically the same size, but the contact patch on the flywheel is smaller on the 200 mm. Why are you replacing your clutch? Do you want something more sporty or are you just doing a worn out clutch change? I ask because 200 mm clutch sets have their advantages. Since the pressure plate and clutch disc are smaller, there's less rotating mass so the engine will rev faster. You can get a simple performance 200 mm clutch and not have to worry about it slipping. I use a 200 mm ACT heavy-duty clutch kit on the GZE with a C-50 in my 86. Even with the extra boost the clutch doesn't slip. |

Thanks for the info! Yes, the clutch is on its way out so I will need to replace it as it is. If the clutch will last a bit longer I would like to throw on a lightened flywheel on there at the same time. However, finding a lightened 200mm flywheel is kind of hard...all the ones I see are 212mms. If it doesn't last, I'll just throw on a new 200mm clutch and be happy with that for a while seeing as, like you mentioned, its not without its own advantages.
Either way, I plan on just throwing on a stock clutch because for an NA car, I hear they are more than addequate. |

if you plan a lightened flywheel the 212 lightened is lighter than any 200 so go for it.

.....but the 200mm and 212mm aren't actually physically identical in size..... the ring gear is in the same location, and the PP bolts are in the same place.... but the outer edge of the flywheel facing on the 200mm doesn't reach the end of the ring gear.... whereas the 212mm does.....
i reccommend using the 200mm... might be slightly heavier, but there's less actual outer rotating mass on them.... have a 200mm (from an ae86) mated to my smallport in the ae92.... and it revs faster than any 4ag (16V) i've seen (for being stock).... quicker than a 20V with a fidanza 212mm even.... |

Sorry for bringing up this old thread.
I have 212mm stock clutch . And want to change to a lighter flywheel, and change the lutch plate at the same time. But every set I find is 200mm. If I change both my flywheel, clutch plate and pressure plate to 200mm, will it fit? (Both are 8 bolts) It will not conflict with my starter? Nor splines on the gearbox? Anyone able to confirm? ring gear is the same on both flywheels.
Provided you have a matched set, it will work. the only issue is you cannot mix and match as the pressure plate ffor the 200 has a narrower bolting pattern than the 212. Buy whatever one you want if you are getting both flywheel and pressure plate/ clutch disc. |
