Coolant overflow Cap, Or?
Ok, im not sure if thats the name or not. Its a 87 Mr2 1.6 i think. But the Plastic container Of green coolant has no cap. Its just a hose ran into it. Now its starting to smoke and run hot. The engine aint acually smoking its just coming from that hose/container. Is this a cheap fix or not, Please help if u can, Thanks.

the overflow container is spose to have a lid yes. you can buy them from toyota (by memory a hiace? one is the same, but cheaper?). be careful that you put the hose on the lid the correct way though so you the expelled coolant goes into the container. the lid has 2 nipples on it, you want to put the hose from the radiator cap doobie onto the one that has the hose going into the container.
the smoke you see would be steam from the coolant getting hot when running the engine, it does that. when the coolant system gets hot it (the coolant) kinda expands, forceing some coolant out past the radiator cap into the overflow bottle. after you've stopped, got home etc. when the engine cools down it will suck the expelled coolant back into the system from the overlfow bottle. well thats my non-tech way of kinda explaining it... ![]() |

you should be able to get an aftermaket from an auto store. i work for supercheap auto in australia and we have them for about $60. toyota wanted $150 for the standard one and they had to get it from japan. the one i have can be an oil catch can or rad overflow

I get them free when I go to the junk yard. Lots of older toyotas use the same one.

lol i know what you mean, i hate working there. i am only doing it till i work out what i want to do in life. ohh yeah the 25% off doesn't hurt. it wasn't a cap that i meant, it was the entire overflow.
