fuel leak

hey all, i have an 85 MR2 and it has a strange fuel leak. i first replaced the cap and that didnt help then the bit that the cap that the cap screws into came out and i fixed that up but it is still leaking. i cant work it out and niether can the any of the people i have taken it to. any ideas? are the fuel caps for the 85's differant the the 88's? on the net a guy had he fuel filler relocated to in the engine bay, would that be a bad idea if just wont stop?

thanx

So I take it, the fuel leaks from around the fuel cap?

Mine does too ('87 AW11 SC).

Notice someone has coated the outside of the fuel filler opening (where it meets the car body) with silicone sealant. Why? I don't know.

Inspected the fuel cap itself. Surprised that undoing it released a rush of air, suggesting the seal is actually pretty good. Perhaps it leaks as it sloshes around while heating (expanding) and is therefore 'pushed' out the cap? With the cap undone, noticed fuel dripping out of the cap itself.

So is it:

- a poor design of the shallow fuel tank/inlet?
- a faulty fuel cap?

I think I may replace the fuel cap and see if I have any success.

Well, there's my first post out of the way!
