1986 MR2 Automatic?

So this morning I was researching the gas mileage and on a whim I took a look at the 1986 MR2. I had never really checked it before and was pleased to see 25 (city) and 31 (Hwy). Anyway I also noticed that the 1986 MR2 came as an AUTOMATIC!!!??? WOW...I almost fell out of my chair. Now I know that all of you guys drive sticks and wouldn't be caught dead in an automatic...BUT...I am in my 40's...wayyyyy into my 40's and like struts my knees aren't what they used to be. So my question is.....have any of you actually SEEN an automatic MK1? If I could manage to uncover one of those....wow.

I know it's not a real question...I just want to know if any of you have seen one...in the USA?

yes. and i owned a 1988 Supercharged 'autotragic' MR2. sorry! i realize now (i am older as well) that there is a time and place for an autotragic in my life. for example and around-town daily driver might be best as an autotragic.

i also know of a person locally who just bought an 87 auto...tragic.

i've actually seen quite a few on my quest for collection + my gf wanted one i'm still trying to talk her into learning a stick. but they are more abundant than one might think and oddly enough usually in better condition than most manuals due to lack of modifications and (i may sound like a fart) not as many whipper snappers are wanting to go act stupid in an auto

Quite a few MKIs are autos. I'd really suggest looking for a supercharged one, it would make the laggy slushbox a little easier to stomach.

Whatever you do, keep your car around. It's probably not going to bring enough money in to make it worth selling, and you're a rare breed being an original owner

WOW! I didn't know they were so common. I'm keeping my 86...since the insurance company totaled it for the bent hood I don't think it would fetch much. I'm going to keep my eyes open for something in my area....I'm a very patient girl...

Yea, my 87 Used to be autotragic.. but swapped it out for a C-52 5spd. Man that thing was very slow with the autotragic.

Auto MK1's are too common. Parts car down the street from me is auto and it seems like every other one I see is auto.

In fact, when I was looking for an MK1 back in 1994, I drove another auto before I found my next auto and I wasn't looking for anything in particular.. I just thought the car was neat.. never thought about how bad an auto could be. Good thing is that the autos are usually in the best shape out of all the mK1's b/c people dont' tend to beat on them like the 5spds.

AW11 - Super Charger - Automatic

And I get a real kick out of driving her.

Sorry.

Though sometimes it does take some forward planning by disabling overdrive, switching to Sports mode on the shifter, and hitting Power on the ECT-S, to ensure there's (near) instant response at the pedal.

I also enjoy how smooth the thing can be, particularly around town, when you want it to.

yea, I heard the SC auto isn't "that" bad.. and the stall speed is a good bit higher on that auto trans than the NA auto. However, I hate when people refer anything auto as sports mode. It's kind of joke. But, yea.. the SC auto was the fastest production car 0-30 back in 1988.

My brother owned an 86 automatic. It has a higher final drive ratio which is bad for performance but good for gas mileage. He hated the thing cause it was so sluggish.

There was one in Austin for sale with a blown head gasket last month. It is probably still for sale.

Well to be honest, it only says [S] so perhaps that actually refers to the 'sluggish' mode?

Actually, the [S] mode keeps one's shifts between gears 1 and 2, so fun holding gears into corners, with instant take off out of them, though not something one likes to bump into doing 100km/hr (60miles/hr) on the free way.

And the [PWR] switch appears to allow the car to continue revving higher before shifts, and will hold the revs high for a few secs if one doesn't release the accellerater right away, so again handy for quick spurts of the acellerator without a lag waiting on gearbox to shift back down for some oomph.

Yeah, yeah, I should just trade it in for a manual!

Still working on how the MANU (manual?) mode sits between the [PWR] and [ECON] modes. The only reference I have points to gear shifts at revs somewhere between the ECON and PWR selections. Not sure if it offers anything else.

On this Japanese import, I put it down to a good ol' fashioned 'engrish'.

Yep, while wheels won't spin on launch, one's never left in the dust at traffic lights.

I don't know what S is.. Maybe someone put that there on the button. But, all autos had ECT an dthe O/D OVerdrive switch on the shifter and the O/D normal econ lights on the gauge cluster. THe ECT was under the wiper switch.. SOme of the early auto na ECT switches were a little different in Japan.

Auto SC is probbably not that bad.. just not for me and not for a lot of people. Plus you can't hide the fact that it's an auto when you have the ttops off. Ahh.. I just hate auto...

Nope, on the shifter, one can select between [S] and [D] (along with the usual low, neutral, reverse, and park).

So on a regular auto, [S] would be [2], or similar, only a regular auto, of course, woudn't redline @ 7500RPM, thereby making the 2nd gear mode on the AW11 actually useful from a, er, 'sports' point of view.

The ECT-S buttons (under the wiper switch) are PWR and MANU (and with nothing selected, enables the ECON mode, as shown on the guage cluster).

My two questions are:

- What is MANU mode exactly, and if it stands for 'manual', why is it called that?
- What exactly does ECT-S stand for?

Having driven manual cars for almost 20 years, and now owning my first auto, I can assure you that one's manhood is unaffected by the transmission in the vehicle one's driving.

Too bad the AW11 is so rare in Australia. There's just one 5spd manual SC for sale here right now, and it's 4000km away and across a body of water. If the two were side-by-side, I'd pick the manual for sure. Having said that, now I've owned my auto AW11 for sometime now, should a manual show up, I'm thinking I'd be tempted to stick with the devil I know.

Theres an ECT-S button?? The only button I have ever seen is an "ECT" Button, NO "S" is included. I have never seen that. ECT is almost on every Toyota Automatic.

Manual is when it is off the Overdrive.. The ECT just makes the car delay in shifting from gear to gear. The only numbers I had on my shifter column was L1 and L2, which are the low gears and then drive, reverse.. heck.. it's been so long.. I can't remember. I have some pics and I'll look.

It does when you drive an MR2, atleast around my area.
