Geyser, Help!

Ok, I posted the same question on "the other board" but I need all the help I can get...

Ok, here is the deal. My neighbor's 86 has developed an old faithful problem. He was driving home from work today and his car overheated. He manged to get it home and let it cool off for a couple of hours. He filled back up the system with water, left the radiator cap off, and started the car. Water started spewing about two feet in the air right out of the radiator cap hole! He shut it off, put the radiator cap back on, and when he started it it blew the water out through the reservoir. What is the deal with theis guys?? Has anyone seen this before? Head gasket, clog in the system, what? Thanks.

Well you have a lot of pressure building up somehow and quickly. How long did he drive the car after it started overheating? Sounds like the head has warped. Is there any white smoke coming out the exhaust?

Either way it sounds like it's time to have a mechanic check that out.

It's weird, there is no water coming out the pipe, no water in the oil either. No typical signs of a head gasket, but I don't see any other reason that the system could pressurize almost instantly after starting the car.

Could be blocked up somehow after the cap but I don't even know how that would occur. What happens if you block up the overflow?

We haven't tried to block the overflow. The whole car might blow up then...

what about the thermostats, could be stuck closed and not allowing the coolant to go to the radiator. also a leaky hose could cause you to overheat as well as a headgasket. It may be that the broken hose is hot and the crack small so that you cant see it, eventually it will burst.
