Please help!! Possible tranny problems.

Hey guys I'm new to mr2s. I bought mine 2 weeks ago for $600 and now I'm leaking clutch fluid. It was shifting fine until yesterday and I could only put it in 3rd gear. I tried putting it in 1st, 2nd, and reverse but it just started grinding. I hear a rattling noise when I take off from a stop. I put dot 3 brake fluid in the clutch fluid reservoir but it seems like its not draining back to the tranny because the reservoir is still full. what's wrong with it? can i do it myself or do i have to pay more $$ than the car is worth? thkx

not too sure but it could be the slave thats gone. FYI most people will need info like year, NA/SC, standard or upgraded clutch ect.

uum, where are you leaking it from?

Can you shift gears with the engine off and NOT using the clutch?

How do you know its leaking?

If it IS leaking, and it has leaked out, there MIGHT be air in the lines, you MIGHT have to bleed the thing.

You got too many variables and not enough info posted to properly help you.

Under the engine compartment, near the transaxle

yes i can shift gears with the engine off witout the clutch

How do you know its leaking?
everywhere I park i see clear fluid spots

Is it still leaking?

If youre leaking, locate leak, replace component.

Its possible your slave cylinder is bad, and its leaking from there.

Thats the same place youd bleed it from. Theres a nipple like on a brake caliper you bleed from. Slave cylinder is usually located on the front of the tranny near the front engine mount. Its identifable by the nipple, the rod that actuates the fork, and it generally has a cylinder shaped appearance.

If youre leaking enough, you wont build pressure. No pressure, no clutch actuation.

Thanks man. that may be the problem. i got to pick up a haynes book one day. i'm going to check out the slave and replace it.
