I used to have one, long time ago. If I remember correctly, you arm it and disarm it with the key when you lock the car.

thanks, this gives me another idea to see if i can get it to work. i'll get a pic of it later. it sits right beside the subwoofer. i have tried everything except opening the doors from the inside after locking the doors from the outside.

that would be cool if it did work as i'd like to keep my 85 as original as i can, that is with the exception of the front brakes.

I would love to have the factory alarm system, but it would just be for novelty. I wouldn't even install it, I'd just put it away for safe keeping, same for the factory radar detector.

I bought a nice system with 2 way LCD remotes. It has a shit load of cool features. Some of my favorite are:
-remote start, programmable runtimes of 15 to 20 minutes.
-locks doors if unlocked when start sequence is activated.
-If alarm is tripped while still in remote start mode, the engine will shut off, same result if brake pedal is pressed or trunk is opened..
-it uses an RPM sense system that ties into the tach for remote start confirmation. it also uses this to lock the doors once you start driving, like modern cars.
-when ignition is shut off, doors are unlocked
-remote window rollup, as well as door locks and trunk release. Since we don't have power trunks, I am going to use that output for power folding mirrors when I can find a set
-built in turbotimer when I finally go 4AGTE

plenty of other features that I'm not gonna list. I got the kit for $100 on eBay. It's a very nice system.

How come some mk1's came with factory alarms and/or radar dectors? I've never seen one in a car. Was it an option from the factory or dealership? Was it only in certain countries? Only in certain years?

I have other pics of the factory alarm that I'll post later.

Sadly enough, my first MR2, a 85 that I bought in 87 was stolen, and the only thing the thief left still working was the stock alarm system.

I had part of the stock alarm when i bought my car, It had the brain under the seat and the hood pin but thats it. It was still hooked up to the lights but not the horn.

I believe the stock functionality was it would sound the horn and flash the lights if the key wasnt put in the ignition within 30 seconds of opening the door. If the frunk/trunk/engine bay was opened the alarm would sound immedately. There is a switch in front of the shifter with an on/off toggle.

Anyway, I ripped all evidence of that out as soon as I got the car home. I didn't need a crippled alarm killing my battery.
