Stage one is running
Well I finally have my car running with a booster on hydrogen. Took forever to get the parts and get the wiring right, but it's working well. I haven't driven it enough yet to be able to get good mpg numbers. I will report back when I have them. I call it a "BOD" booster on demand. It has been a fun little project, but I'm glad it's over so I can get back to the real issue of using hydrogen only. I will stay in touch.

well I put some gas in at last and it figured out to 41 mpg. But that's not very accurate because my driving has been limited to running around getting parts and when I do that I'm in a hurry (I hate shopping), so with more time spent driving, the mpg should go upwards. But at least it hasn't blown up, ha

I will be able to give details by the end of summer. If I blow a hole in MY piston, well sux to be me. But if you blow a hole in your piston because of me, well I would have a hard time dealing with that. Anyway, what I have now is just baby steps and really the only reason that I posted in the first place is so that when I really have something to say, some here will know that it is not just a fly-by-night type of thing. But I am getting close.

As with any project like this that presumably requires extensive modification I would think it'd always be an at your own risk thing. Even after it's been done several times.

Well, I'm back. Made many changes, some good, some don't work well. It's all evolving. Just wanted to update the forum on a booster that I have made which is running in my 86 mr2. This is version 2 which is now getting 36 mpg, yeah I know, no big whoop-t-do, but it is better than the 27mpg that I normally get. Version 1 got 41mpg. My next version will hopefully get even better as I learn what I need to change, until the big day comes when I won't be using gasoline at all.
This is just a brute force electrolyser which creates hydrogen and oxygen (HHO). The HHO is run through a tube into the air intake before the throttle body. The amount of HHO that this unit makes is very small (1 to 4 liters/minute)compared to what is needed to run on HHO alone(23+liters/minute). But even with this low production, there are good benefits. HHO burns very, very fast which is helping to vaporize the gasoline at TDC so that a more complete burn is possible. As HHO recombines to h2o it is enthropic (takes in heat), which helps cool the motor and the exhaust. It's kinda neat to feel the exhaust tips-they are a lot cooler. HHO also cleans the motor. I pulled a plug and it looked brand new (one year old, daily driver). Overall, I am happy with the unit, but I am also eager to start on the next one. The only reason that I am posting this is that I have recently seen this same type of unit for sale for $900. I am sure that there will be other people making and selling the same type. I put mine together for less than $50. I didn't want any mr2 folks getting ripped off. If there is any interest, I will be happy to give any information you might need. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...rkplug0003.jpg http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...rkplug0001.jpg Last edited by yikes; 08-05-2007 at 08:25 PM.. |

I would like to see a diagram of your unit. I am going to be working on my own and I have some really good ideas. Glad to see somebody else is doing this as well.

I'm very interested in this also. I did alot of research on this subject and was quite interested in it. Unfortunately I havent tried it since I have not had a daily beater to test it on and dont want to blow up my modded GZE. I have considered attempting to converting to hydrogen-only (or mostly hydrogen) using an electrolyser setup, but in the bench testing I did I wasnt able to create anywhere near enough hydrogen through electrolysis. I think in order to convert to hydrogen-only you'd need to have a storage tank of some sort with hydrogen in it (filled from your home-based electrolyser)
Keep up the good work and keep us informed! Brando |

so where does the power come from to power electrolysis? that is an extremely power hungry process? How did you get ahold of someyhing platimum with huge surface area for your plates??
