Where To Start When You Notice A Small Amount of Power Loss.
Hey Guys.
My NA MK1 seems as if it has lost power over the last month or so, I am pretty damn mechanically inclined however its nice to take advantage of the community and their opinions, 2 heads are better than one this is true but 400 heads are 400 times better than 1 Im probably due for the usual wires , cap , rotor etc. I have changed the oil very recently and again put synthetic in it. I should however mention that my header has about a 1" hairline crack on the #4 side. I have a parts car and was going to replace it but it turns out my parts car's header is cracked in the same place but welded . My question is where should I start on restoring some power? My compression on all cylinders is at 170 or 1 or 2 psi off on #1 and #3. I have Bosch 4x platinum plugs in now but I have some Denso irridium ready to be plugged in whenever. The only reason I feel like I am experiencing power loss is if I dump the clutch it is much more difficult to get my tires to spin on dry pavement, 3 months ago or so it would roast em all day long, I have the same tires and suspension setup aside from the fact that i dialed my Tokico's from 5 on all 4 corners to 3 on all 4 corners. I know some of you boners will say "it's an 88 NA" I am well aware of that, but it doesnt seem like the same old car, May just be some sort of placebo BS. Thanks for any help guys. Drift |

i'd take the Bosch plugs out, and i would look for a new exhaust manifold or header.
and what about tyres? have you gotten a different size or compound? |

What about a weld on the exhaust manifold? would that hold me until I found a good header? My car sounds like shiiit since that crack recently occured. The plugs will be swapped as soon as i can get 15 minutes free time (working 10+ hr das blows) And I have the same tires I always have.

As long as the weld looks good, and is actually sealing the crack then it should be fine. I dont think it would cause that much of a power loss, I have a 1989 Corolla SR5 and it had a cracked exhaust manifold. Other than sounding like crap it didnt really affect power, or at least not noticably.
