i dont know about in the US but in australia you can get regular bulbs that have LED's in them. brake lights have about 5 and others have 2-3. have a look around or a look on e-bay

Just an esthetic note here if you care: most of the newer, better cars have old fashioned lamps for the signals, but their brake lights are LEDs. It's nice having instant snap on brake signals but it's not so nice to see a signal light snap on and off like a strobe light. The better car manufacturers (mostly imports) have picked up on this and adjusted their designs accordingly.

it's mostly to do with longevity, though. most LED have difficulty because of their directional emission of light. some of the newer LED are more of a non-directional for better brightness in car application. there are some front amber LED available for the front marker lights, but i don't i have yet to see anything made for the rear marker. further, the LED would have nothing on the bearing of "snapping" like a strobe. that would be dictated by the actual flasher portion of the circuit. the reasons for LED coming 'on' so much faster than an incandescent is dictated more by the current requirement for an LED which is considerably less than a standard bulb.

I remember when Cadillac came out with their LEDs taillamps, they sold it as a safety feature, because LEDs give the drivers behind you a mere fraction of a second to being braking.
