cam positioning question
wuts up, i have a situation id like to ask your help with, the name is Jay and id apretiate anything you can tell me. ok so heres my issue, i have an 87 mr2 with a dual overhead engine (not sure of the code, but i can look into it if its necesary) i was doing the timing belt on it and when taking it apart i did not mark my cam sprockets, i ended up finishing it all and reassembling with what i thot would be the right way, as you can imagine it wasnt, i ended up bending all the valves wich really sux, i took it all apart, changed the valves and now am at a stand still... so my question to you is, how does it line up? it has the 3 slots on either cam and its really pissing me off now, i need this out, so any help would be great, thx

Jay, Sorry to hear about the engine damage. I didn't think it was possible to bend the valves since it is a non interference engine. Has your engine head been shaved or do you have non stock pistons?
Anyhow, here is a picture of the top 2 sprockets and the slight indention that is the mark on the outer edge of the sprockets. The steel cover behind the sprockets have a small dimple that you must line the indentions to. ![]() This is the alignment for the crank. ![]() Note: If the head has been excessively shaved, your belt may be too long and proper time can't be made. Good luck, John |
