Which to rebuild first?
I am going to rebuild the 16v NA head and I GZE bottom end. Which should I do first? I need to get the GZE and then rebuild it so it would be cheaper at first to get the head rebuilt. I have a granpa that builds V8's and stuff and I could get him to clena it up and rebuild it. So what do you guys think?

unless I am reading this wrong, shouldnt you just have them both rebuilt at the same time... like to save time and stuff? even if you are going to do them both yourself, like one at a time, does the order matter?

I would do the bottom end first because I would think you would want to accomidate what is on the bottom end with what you will use for the head. Just IMO.

Well I have kind of changed my plans agian (cant stop lol). I have made up my mind and am going to just rebuild the stock 4age. Get everything balanced hone the block (not bore it) and get my grandpa to rebuild the head and block. He drag races in Chester, South Carolina and other places in the area and builds the heck out of engines so I thought he would be the person for the job. I am not going to bore out the block even though it has 140k miles because these blocks are cast iron so they dont wear as much, however, I will get std rings. Should I get .50mm instead? Nigel the reason why get one before the other is because of money. We dont always have money just waiting to be spent so you have to decide which needs to get done first or which you would like to get done. Any one know what the cost would be to get the block rebuilt and get everything in the block that turns balanced. I have been told that to rebuild the 16v head it is 130. While the engien is all apart I will be painting it and getting every thing looking nice so when I get it turboed it will be complete and I can move on to other things like suspension. What colors look good in the engine bay? I was going to have a red and black theme. Paint the block black, the oil pan aluminum color, valve covers red, middle section of that black. Polish the intake manifold. Paint the exhaust heat sheild black, ect... Thanks for all the input, keep on posting, lol.

I think the colour (canadian spelling, not misspelled) of your engine bay depends on the colour of your car. My current car is blue with a purple engine and it looks okay. I would have prefered blue and yellow accents in the engine bay and when I sway in the v6 or 3sgte I will do blue and yellow. My previous mk1 was red with red valve covers, and I thought that looked slick. I think the best looking engine bay though is the white mk1.5 with the water to air intercooler or whatever it is called. All white car with white everything in the engine bay except for a few blue hoses and a blue blow off valve. So cool. I want to be just like him!

Well i have to forget about rebuilding it. Some may know that I am only 14, and yes I can't drive lol. Well this summer I might be moving to Iowa because of family and finacal problems. There you only have to be 14 to drive where as in South Carolina oyu have to be 15. So when or if I move there my car needs to be running good and reliable so I can get a job and save up for and engine rebuild. I have taken out the pistons, and also broke one which sucks. The money that I have was going towards new rod bearings and piston rings. Well now I have to buy a piston from a board member. I think I will be buying one from Donalson on the other boards. Before my brother took off my head to use on his car and before I took the pistons out the car ran fine and burnt little oil. Should I go ahead and buy new rod bearings and rings, or just get new rings. I have also get money for the head to be resurfaced and than get money for oem hg and head bolts. SO i dont have alot to spend on the block. What sould I do.

Yes, get the bearings. But of even more importance,,an imperative, if you will,,,,,get GRANDPA involved. Talk to him about all of this. Get his ideas. Use them. Listen. Learn. If he is staying there, you don't have much time to learn what has taken him a lifteme to learn, so he has to teach it quick. You have to learn it quick. Have him hone the block while you watch. Have him inspect the head, while you watch. Allow him the chance to be a grandpa. And for you to be a grandson.
Go cut grass to get the money needed. Or shovel horse shit. Whatever, But you show grandpa you are serious about this. Have him check out the other pistons for land fractures. You may need more than one from Mark. |

I checked the other ones very closley and they looked good. Mark is giving me a GREAT deal on them. $25 with shipping and comes with a piston and rod. How did you know I was moving with my Grandpa. I did live up in Iowa when I was 5 but my mom got remarried and so we moved to SC. Then she had some problems with him and we had to move out, "GAY". My mom has to take care of "5" people and her self. We had to find a house to live in and my step dad only has to take care of "2" and gets the 6 bedroom house. I was pissed, but go to move on some time.

Oh, but if I could get my car running right with the new rings and bearings, and then get the head fixed and all that I could get a job and earn my money like that. I highly dought that my grandpa would pay me to mow the grass or any of that. They lost a good bit of money in the stock market and will have to move soon. We might pay a piece of land and then get a house on it. Build a building for our cars and his machines. Then I wont have to work in the cold, lol.
