1989 mk1 NA won't start

My mk1 died on me on my way to work. I was doing 80mph and heard a "WHUMP" come from the engine bay and then the motor just quit running.
So far I've replaced the fuel filter, plug wires, plugs, dist. cap & rotor, and coil. I was told by the mechanic at work that he thought it sounded like the timing belt broke, and told me that if I took the dist. cap off and jumped the ignition and the rotor turned then it's not the timing belt. I tried that and sure enough it moved so now I'm at a loss for what is wrong it wants turns over but doesn't start. Any ideas?

Oh I appreciate any feed back, unfortunatley I wish it was that easy. I have a new battery. I failed to mention I had to replace that too. P.S. when my car was broken down on the side of the road some fine person busted both rear view mirrors off. Any ideas on how to locate any.
