has anyone tried with a proper diff?
I understand that the car's suspension geometry is set up for grip driving, which makes drifting a little more difficult (3rd Gen RX-7 drifters have voiced their disconcern for this) but the differential makes a huge difference. Ive owned 6 Nissan 240SXs and 3 Corollas, and the biggest difference in the ability to drift the car was the differential (i.e. 2-way diff). the open diffed cars that I've drifted act somewhat "funny" (as in one side would randomly give up spinning). Ive also owned a Fiat X1/9 which was rediculous, if the rear slipped AT ALL, the entire car would just rotate until the momentum stopped. So I do understand that the AW11 is difficult to drift, however, I wonder if the issue issue can be resolved with rather simple tuning (i.e. weld/stronger diff and proper suspension tuning) |

any RWD car will drift. its the set up, the driver, and the power/torque your laying to the ground is what really matters. If people in Japan can do it i dont see why anyone else couldnt... Oh wait, i forgot people in Japan are driving GODS!!!
but anyways, mr2's are bad for swinging around because of the short wheel base, the engine being in the rear, and because of their handling capabilities. If you wanna try it just go gentle on the E-Brake that was easiest for me when me and a buddy were messin around in his |

good lord, that vid....do want.
although the short wheel base was definitely affecting it lol. bigger cars seem to transition better, looked like the mr2 was being whipped around into submission. |

since its been opened, caught my eye, and just lately got stuck on initial d, i wanna talk about this too.
not trying to put a new subj (if i do) but is initial d anywhere accurate to how they convey their knowledge? well, in a stock mr2, (89) is it possible? so many yes and no's. lately, ive been testing her around without using the ebrake and just the pedals, and the closest i got was making a hard quick 90 degree and pulling out really hard.(i kno, no where close to a drift[yet...hopefully]) |

It is possible, just don't try it in first gear you'll run out of gear fast

What!?!?! You too!! Too bad my story ended with a felony evading arrest charge... 138 mph with no headlights on, north bound on Hwy 16 coming from Poteet, TX. The cop actually called off the chase because he was in fear of the public safety; but later caught me after i ran into a ditch. Ahh good times sleeping in Atascosa county jail..

When you come into a turn don't kick it in first you'll cherp the wheels and that's it your not gonna spin them to hold a good drift, come in alittle faster and kick it in second you'll see a difference. You'll have more gear to spin and can controll the car with the gas instead of the ebrake

@ jl, im a lil confusing, and im going to assume that your reply is the willlingness to help out a novice's interests.
so this is what ive been doing, after comming off of an expressway, i wait to come to a light where i make a left at the light. this is where things happen, in about a mile or so, im at about 3-4th gear running around 4-5 k rpm. im not really doing a drift after this piece of detail, just seeing the first steps to what i have to do. at about 55-60 mph, i do a hard brake with the brake pedal and start steering left but i just end up commin down to neutral at about 25 mph with the wheels lightly spinning and comming to a really slow recovery. i apologize if i am mentioning or expecting too much from a reply, but would like to show my appreciation anyways. |
