you can, but sustaining a drift in a MkI is a paradox of sorts. in plain engrish-the car just handles too damned well!

i think you'll need a whole lot of engine power to keep those rear wheels spinning under the weight of the back.

the low moment of polar inertia and short wheelbase makes the MkI difficult to drift.

ok so in general it is possible but with the lack of engine power and the mk1's great handling its just a pain in the but so to speak... so my best bet would be to up grade to a 20v

i have seen a few more powerful midship cars drifting, have a look on u tube. i have tried a bit of it, damn it was hard but it did work. IMO i would just buy a cheap car to learn to drift in like a corolla (if you have them in your country). from what i have seen your car looks damn nice and it would be a shame to crash it trying to drift. anyway thats just my 2c but with whatever you decide, good luck

i bought an SC from a drifter who was pretty decent in the mr2 actually. he went on to a turbo II rx7.. we did a turbo back exhaust on that which got him like 4 psi more boost and 50+ more ft lb of torque with no other mods.. clutch slipped very first test drive with new exhaust.
Anyhow, it can be done, its much easier in a gze car as you need torque to get teh wheels spinning easily and controllably.

short wheel base is the attirbute that makes it the most difficult.

I bought mine because it would drift when I wanted it to and it would grip great otherwise. Just try not to slide sideways prior to a curve too early... don't ask how I know. When your car comes to a stop and your wheel is broken the police WILL take you to jail... and some of them will be angry they were chasing you... sorry, bad memories... good times. They will, however, be very impressed that you led them on a high speed chase through the countryside at 2:30 in the morning for thirty minutes in a 4 cylinder stock N/A MR2 that they initially called in as a "Honda Prelude". Suppose I can mention that since it is resolved and charges were dropped a while back... but yes, they drift and drift well if you know what you're doing... just don't be expecting to use any of that handbrake technique with a mk1... seems to work best with toying between velocity into a turn/throttle control for me. I've messed around with a modded NSX that looked to get loose in the back end when on bumpy asphalt pretty badly... the mk1 held far better and pulled him terribly in the curves where he had to let off. In the straights of course he pulled me by a little but every curve more than made up for what he could pull on the straights. When a mk1 lets go though... it spins. Found that out while drifting the S/C a few weeks ago and ended up doing a 540 facing the opposite direction exiting the curve. Fun, but only because I kept it on the asphalt. I certainly wouldn't recommend pushing them beyond their limits too far... especially on cheap economy tires like I was that day!
