Holy shit 6hr to tint the back window only..wow! I got quotes of $100 - $150 to tint the rear and and both corner windows with metalized tinting (20 shade), sounds to me like 1hr maybe 1.5hrs tops, is there something I should know about tinting before I get it done?? |

Unfortunately you cannot get pre cut tint for the MKI, but can for the MKII. You can usually get the kit for about $30. This makes for much better results. With the precut kit, expect about 45 minutes - all you have to do is spray, peal and squeegy. Also, this really helps with the rear window on the MKII since most precut kits are preshrunk or multipiece to make it easy. An MKI is about an hour job. I am not that great at tinting either, but both cars are extremely easy compared to almost everything else on the road...frameless side widows, simple rear quarter windows, flat sqare rear (on MKI). I would never pay anyone $150, particularly for the MKI since it is so easy - basically like a small pickup truck. Retail places simply have a rack rate that covers all cars. Why pay the same price as the guy with a Maxima type car which has 2 front quarter windows, 4 framed windows, and a complex curved rear window that is nearly impossible to reach. Simply go to someone that tints for a shop, but have them do it off of the clock (at their house) - you will be looking at about $50 in my experience. |

I'm doing my project '87. My '89 SC also has it. In WI, legal level is 50% for the front side windows and 35% behind that.
I'm going to the less than legal side of things with 35% all around and 20% on the 89's T-tops which is what it has now, but it's purpling out. The tint I'm putting on the '87 NA is a mirrored 35% tint. It was my first time doing it since the '89 SC had it done with the PO many years ago, and I did it with all the windows removed, so it was not too difficult. I would not go very dark with tint. I find it obnoxious at night. T-tops however can and should be tinted IMO. I will be doing it to my '93 T when it comes out of storage in spring. |

In cold weather you can then simply remove the covers giving an open air effect / feel. This is particularly nice on a cold winter day when it is cool but it is very sunny. |

DEPENDS ON WHERE YOU LIVE WHEATHER YOU NEED TINT. I WILL TELL YOU IN FLORIDA IT IS A MUST. DOING THE TINT YOURSELF ALL ACOUNTS FOR THE AMOUNT OF PATIENCE YOU HAVE. I GAVE UP, BUT A PLACE NEAR WAS HAVING A SPECIAL SO I GOT IT DONE FOR $60.

As for winter driving, my car is off the road and stored from Nov 1-->May 1. Salt is on the road, and there is no need to drive this car when it's 20°F outside like tonight. I have a truck now for that. I guess it's all personal preference and differences in climate that might dictate the function. |

In the south, you pretty much have to run the covers when it's sunny from April through October - and likely all year round in FL, TX, AZ, and S-CA (I would assume).
In TN, you can pull the covers on sunny 45-60 degree winter days and warm the car up to a comfortable temperature without running a drop of heat - feels just like Spring or Fall in the car and is nice and bright emulating having the tops out, which is what I was speaking of. However I totally agree, anything below that range, the car should be parked - these aren't exactly winter cars, and as I have recently learned from the forum, MR2's can rust if up North. |

I tinted mine 5% on the sides and eyebrow, 20% in the rear. It's a must in OK. During the summer you absolutely bake anytime you drive even sort of into the sun.

Nice car, the tint looks good and so do the wheels. I think I'm gonna get it done for sure now. I think I'll go 20% rear windows, 5% sides.
I'll try to ask a few shop technitions if they'll do it off the clock for $50, but as it stands now the best deal I've been able to find is $100 for the rear three windows..........still seems a bit steep to me. Anyone know about pre-cut mrk1 kits off ebay? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Pre-C...temZ8014615581 What do ya think about the price.......quality?? |

those are some sweet looking mk1's, the tint in the back window of mine is 3 different layers each layer applied plus sit time plus custom eyes some where in the middle of it all took 6 hrs from a guy that has been doing tinting for 15 years, got the rear sides tinted too but that was like 20 minutes. and road head hard as hell in a mk1 (she gets in the way of shifting)
