Excess Freeplay in steering - 87 MKI

I have an 87 with too much freeplay in the steering. The problem is in the Steering shaft itself, just above the u-joint that goes through the floor. There is a slip joint arrangement there that must have originally been joined with vulcanized rubber. The rubber is mostly gone, and there is considerable slack in the joint. I took it apart and filled it with RTV, but that didn't last very long - now it is even worse.

Is this part available? Is there a cheap fix?

I have no idea if that's available. My EPC doesn't work right now, but I do have a spare steering column if you're interested. Probably not cheap to ship though, but let me know.
