California Legal Catalytic Converter for 1986 MKI

Hi all-

I recently got my muffler replaced at midas. Getting the car back it still sounded like there was an exhaust leak. I tracked it down to the catalytic converter. the flange that connects the cat to the muffler is 1/2 gone. The guy at midas bent the cat shield up and around the piping. I think more exhaust comes out here than the muffler. Nice huh?

Anyone know what the toyota part # is for a 1986 MR2 California legal cat, or a decent direct fit OEM replacement?

The one currently installed is a standard bolt on model.

There was no separate designation for Cali in 86.

Just called toyota in San Luis. They want $487 for it. That seems really steep for a cat.

How about a CA smog legal OEM direct fit aftermarket part? Ideas?

Lithia Toyota will be much cheaper than the dealership you called, but may possibly still be expensive. I'm not familiar with any of the aftermarket options so perhaps someone else could chime in. How about Midas pays for it since they broke it?

To be fair I'm not sure they did break it. But the hammering my girlfriend reported while she was there....very suspicious. The cat is really rusted on both flanges. It's possibly the original. The only reason I went to midas was because of the lifetime warranty on the muffler. They gave my girlfriend such a bad time and hassel about THEIR warranty policy it was pathetic. Honest auto repair is very hard to find these days.

If I can find abolt on part I'll do it myself. If OEM is the only way...gotta do what ya gotta do. I'll try Lithia as well.

swift-

Could you post the website link? For $85 and a quiet car it would be worth it.

Thanks

sure, here ya go - Toyota Mr2 Catalytic Converter - Auto Parts Warehouse

i would double check to make sure this will fit on your exaust system, some are welded.

my system is a walker 2to1 with flex pipe, and a bosal muffler.

Google has a shopping link that searches through thousands of online catalogs, thats how i found this one

That Magnaflow cat (23886) that swift978 pointed out is a pretty dang good deal. I would not have a problem using that if I was running a near-stock engine with stock downpipe and muffler. It would be hard for me to build one using a Magnaflow blank and the correct flanges and sell it for that, especially considering they're shipping it for free. Plain Magnaflow blanks cost $63 from the same place, and then I have to buy and add flanges. Must be a very low margin operation they're running.

If you were inclined to go chasing horsepower in the future via different mufflers or downpipes, there are different and better cats to use, but as a bolt-in replacement for the NA cat, this would probably be a very good option. Of course that assumes that the vendor is reliable and the part is a true bolt-in as described. This one looks nice but I've seen others that are sort of semi-finished and require additional cutting and welding to install, or don't have nice flanges that accept decent gaskets, etc.

very valid point with the gaskets, mine installed ok but i will periodically tighten all the connections to make sure the gaskets wont blow, seeing as there is some space between the fitting plates.

i'm one for finding good deals wish it could be my job..

infact it kinda is a job for me, since a penny saved is a penny earned

My girlfriend and I were talking about the noise coming from the busted cat AGAIN this weekend. It occurred to me that the car is actually permanently registered in Colorado (Long, long story here - don't ask). So it looks like the CA smog requirement is no longer a requirement.

I'll probably order the drop in Magnaflo CAT in a few days, but want to get all the other necessary parts before I order it.

What other parts do I need to order? The current bolts and gaskets are toast and/or missing.

Thanks all for your help.
