speed vs rpm

in my 85 n/a when im doing 80mph the rpms are about 4k. even at 55 they are almost 2700. does this sound normal for the mk1? cuz it seems high compared to other cars. what rpms do u guys run at this speed?

Yep, sounds right to me. I noticed, unlike most cars, the MR2 doesn't have much of a difference between 4th and 5th - only about 500 RPMs. Most vehicles I've driven 5th is overdrive and meant mainly for cruising at high speeds and maintaining low RPMs to save gas, but the MR2s gear ratio is different than your everyday economy car.

Someone on the forums (no idea who right off hand) did something so he was only at about 2500-3000 on the freeway. It was posted in one of the various MPG (gas) threads.

Some of the mid to early 90's Corolla and Prisms with the 4afe had really low finals making it great for economy. Think it was just the very plain base model, not a DX or anything, which IIRC still had lower finals than the MR2.
