MK1 Oil leak
My 1987 MR2 is leaking oil, but I have not crawled under it yet to really look for for where it is coming from. Can some one please tell me the most common places that they leak from. I'm pretty sure it is coming from the distributor, as the rubber ring that goes around the shaft probably needs to be replaced. I'm pretty sure the oil pan gasket needs replacing as well. I had not checked the oil in quite a while, and for the last week, it had been making a funny noise wile running when I would first start it up. I finally checked the oil this weekend, and did not even register on the dipstick!
I added like 3 quarts of oil to it before it did register on the dipstick. I'm not sure how long I ran it like this, but the engine is still holding up. |

wow dude, i think you really need to look after your car. my basic car checks are every 2-3weeks. as for where it is leaking from just give your engine a good clean and have a look in another week and with any luck you'll be able to find the leak

the distributor o-ring is the most common oil leake gremlin. it'll even make the sump look like it's leaking.
put a new o-ring on and give the engine a good degrease, go for a drive and then check for any new oil. Quote:

Another oil leak hot spot is (are?) the lines to the oil cooler. The oil pan does not have a "gasket"

Crank seal and Cam covers are also common, When putting on new cam cover seals the most common overlooked must-do is putting some gasket maker in the extreme corners where the cam caps are closest to the T-belt, a drop of gasket maker in these 4 spots will prevent leaks which WILL be there if not done even with new gasket.

I tend to get oil in my spark plug valley, probably from the cam covers. But I also have an oil leak somewhere further down, possibly the head gasket.
