Replacing the motor is a bit excessive for a bad head gasket. I'd say only do that if you planned on doing it in the first place, or maybe if the head or block are damaged.
Changing a head gasket isn't hard, just time consuming. Not sure how hard it is on a MR2, but I've done it on an escort and a plymouth laser, and neither where that bad, but they don't have a trunk in the way. ![]() |

changing the head gasket is very simple on the mr2 the bgb will walk you through taking it all apart then from there you just scrap the old gasket and reinstall the head. also do it before it too long so you wont need to have the head and block resurfaced due to warpage.

I was thirteen when I helped my Dad change the head gasket on his Escort, it was the middle of winter in Alaska, and it was about -10f out, and we where outside. Between me my Dad and my Brother it took about four hours of in and out of the house to warm up, and back out to the car. The car worked great afterwards. :P
