oil cooler questions
hello all,
still a newby here and would appreciate some help. I have an 87 mr2 n/a and the shop confirms my oil cooler and lines are needing to be replaced. can anyone point me to somewhere online that carries these items or the part numbers so I can continue my search. Any comments on oem versus after market for these replacements? Thanks |

???? Replace the oil cooler? It's a trombone shaped tube on the back of the firewall that water flows through. The oil lines are just a tube that is inside that tube (for water to "cool" the oil). I've never heard of one needing to be "replaced". The lines leading to the tube are notorious for becoming a nasty leak once the lines get old and brittle. You can just buy new lines and replace them to stop the oil leaks.

OK. Not sure why the oil filter plate would go bad? There is a pressure relief valve at the bottom of the plate that can get pretty knarley and bind up I suppose, but you should be able to by that spring and valve separately. You should be able to pick one up for cheap on here as well (I think I've got a couple in a box somewhere).

There are O-Rings behind the adaptor plate on the block that will leak oil. We see them leaking all the time and the rubber oil lines to the oil cooler. You can pick up the o-rings from your local toyota dealership. You can find oil lines at any local parts store. I also put a small amont of toyota FIPG sealer on the o-rings when doing this repair. We are in the process of doing JAP replacement on a 85MK1 for a customer that is road racing with us in NASA.

It's my understanding (Porsche manual) that you don't want to be putting RTV (FIPG) on an 'O ring because it privents it from working properly. Otherwise the BGB would be telling us to use it? You definitely should replace those O rings though but I still don't see why you'd have to replace the entire oil housing itself. Just check to make sure the pressure relief valve works properly.

thanks for the input all
so for an update, i have replaced my oil cooler lines, which was my main source for oil leak. however now i notice that the banjo bolt that is right by the oil filter is leaking too. I am going to replace the gaskets for the oil cooler plate and this banjo bolt for the upper oil cooler line.
Does anyone know the part numbers for these gaskets? I contacted toyota where i am and everyone there appears not to know anything about what i'm talking about needing to replace. maybe just a way to get me to take my baby to them which they want a fortune to fix it. All the help has been greatly appreciated. Chad |

If you read the post you'll see that whoever the OP brought his car to is telling him he needs to replace the oil filter housing. Not you. Why would you need to put RTV on a rubber O'ring? Why wouldn't the BGB tell you to do so if they thought it would help? Do you use it on the valve cover gaskets as well? The only place I've ever seen it mentioned is in the factory 911s Porsche Factory Manual, where they tell you NOT to do it. And, just because YOU have never had a problem with it doesn't mean that some poor schmoe who's running one of your engines two years down the road hasn't had a glob of RTV end up in his bearings. Ask Bill what'shisname what RTV can do to an engine. Just put a coat of oil on the O'rings, (just like your oil filter gasket) and you'll be fine.

Thanks 1fastmr2
Your a life saver, I ordered both o rings today with absolutely no problems. They will be here tomorrow and my project for the weekend is set. 2 days away from no more oil spots on my carport!
Any chance you know what the length of the oil dipstick for a 2 is? My friend mixed a few I had that were pretty much the same looking(said friend no longer messes with with my mr2 stuff.) But I would like to know for sure my oil level is correct. Thanks Chad |
