Coolant Leak Thing

Hey guys.

I've still got overheating issues...

I recently replaced the overflow tank's cap and straw thing, which helped a lot...

But now when I come home and turn off the car the car just leaks a whole bunch of coolant onto the ground...

I'll come out to the car later and about a cup or so of coolant is running down my driveway...

I'm really tired of overheating issues...

What could this be?

Thanks a bunch guys, hopefully after solving this my overheating problems will be over.

The best way to find a coolant leak is to have the system pressure tested. Is the car a MK1?

Thanks,
Phillip

yes it is a MK1.

is there some way i could pressure test it myself?

i've had bad luck with the local Toyota dealership diagnosing problems with this car and i just assume do it myself if at all possible.

thanks.

You can do it yourself. Drive it until it the engine is operating at a normal temp. I would look around the water pump area! That would be my best guess.

okay, i'll try and take a look at the water pump next chance i get...

do you think it's the waterpump itself or a connecting hose?

thanks a bunch.

Go to Auto Zone(for the free tool rental) and see if they have a radiator pressure tester(make sure it has the adapter to fit the coolant neck). Pressurize the system to approx. 16-18 lbs. and find your leak. You don't have to have the car at operating temp. unless, the leak only occurs when its warmed up. The leak will only happen when the car is up to operating tempature. The system builds pressure while running. To answer about the pump. There is a metal tube the runs along the side of the block to the thermostat housing. I have never seen a leak there. Now there is a O-Ring on the front of the engine block for the water pump. I have seen them leak there. But Like I said Putting the system under pressure will help you find the leak. I will say this to all readers in the forum Please change your coolant every 30,000 Miles. Thats a Toyota fact. I have been a mechanic since I was 15 and see a lot of cars and trucks have over heating...blown head gaskets....leaks due to the system NOT BEING SERVICED. Good Luck finding the leak.

Take care,
