Mark1 starters- N/a to S/c swap-5 speeds
My manual shifter S/C street car had a bad starter, I performed the Service Manual diagnosis and discovered the motor was bad but the solenoid/magnetic switch tested ok.
As I layed down this S/C starter next to my 2 N/A starters on the shelf I noticed how very, very similiar the motors and solenoid looked, but not the mounting holes. With nothing to lose I tore them both apart, (a bad habit really.) Well, it turns out they are exactly the same!! Only the front of the starter changes, (this is the part with the reduction gears inside). So, I put the N/A motor and solenoid into the S/C gearset, no problem as it was only 4 bolts. What I learned is that, yes you can put the starter from a N/A car into a S/C, you need to know just how to make it work. |
