Timing Problems with new distributor

Well, I got my MK1 all back together so that all I had to do was start it and time it. If you have read my posting referring to a "Bad oil leak on the back side of my motor...." you know that I replaced everything on the front of the motor. Especially the timing belt and tensioner pulley. I checked and double checked my timing marks in putting on the new timing belt so I am 99.9% certain the belt is on correctly. I bought a new distributor from Toyota and installed it with a new cap and rotor. The engine, to best of my knowledge, was set at TDC. I installed the distributor with the rotor pointing towards the #1 contact point in the cap. To get the car to start I have to move the distributor all the way over to the right. Car barely runs as the idle is so low and rough with very little throttle response. The exhaust sounds uneven but not quite like it is missing a cylinder. Is it possible that I put the distributor in one cog in the wrong direction? Would appreciate some tips on this.

No tips needed. Trial and error are sometimes the best teacher. What I thought was the point of contact for the #1 cylinder was about a gear cog off. I installed the distributor centered into the hole and pointed the rotor directly at the right hand bolt hole for the cap. I then put all applicable parts together and the car cranked right up. It was then a matter of proper timing and the car runs like a champ. Man is it ever good to have the MR2 back on the road again.

Thanks.
