Question READ PLEASE!!! its a question

Im getting a 87' mr2 for free and i already know it wont start because it has been sitting for about 3 years. So what are some things i should look out for? As in what to do to make it run. Becuase i dont want to go out and spend a bunch of money for no reason. So please get back to me.

I own a mk2, and I'm more of a tinkerer than a mechanic.

But I'll make a few suggestions off the top of my head, hopefully a more experienced mk1 owner can chime in.

After sitting for three years, I can pretty much tell you the gas in the tank is probably going to be pretty bad, you'll need to get that out of there (safely please). You'll probably need a new battery, but a charger or pulling a battery out of another car will help you to diagnose any issues. If it were me I would:

Drain the gas.
Change the oil (at the mininimum).
Check the coolant level.
Change the fluids (coolant, brakes, tranny) (needed, but you can can _probably_ ignore these if you're just trying to get it started. but check the coolant)
Give it a power source (battery or charger).
See if she turns over.

Once those are done, you'll know if it will start or not, and you can begin trouble shooting from there. If it starts cool, if not... is it fuel, air, or spark?
IS it throwing any codes. so on and so forth.

once thats done, at least you'll know where to start asking specific questions.

^ What he said, plus change out the spark plugs.

At that point tell us if it starts or not and we can go from there.

Might need to throw in a starter too. Depending on the conditions the car has been in, and what kind of life it had before.

I remember my friend bought a Firebird a few years back and it didn't start at all, he just changed engine fluids and threw on a starter and it started after that.

One thing i would but when first trying to get is started is some eather/instant starting fluid. this can often help engines that dont get used much.

When you get the car it should come with a title to it, and if not you can usually file for a lost title.

Pour an ounce of oil (I used Marvel Mystery Oil) down through the spark plugs holes into each cylinder before you crank it over and let it set for several hours. This oil will seep down to the lowest ring and lubricate them and your cylinder walls and prevent scoring before firing it up.

^ No it should still start, but this will allow the oil to seep into the rings that surround your pistons. Four stroke engines utilize rings around the pistons to keep oil from mixing with the gas. When the motor is not used all of the oil drains back into the pan. If the motor goes an excessively long period with no usage then there is absolutely no lubrication on the piston or the rings until it is started. Basically letting oil sit inside the combustion chamber will help to prevent any damage that may occur by you simply starting the car after letting it sit. This oil will be burned off once you start the car.

Note: You remove* the spark plug and put it into the hole where the spark plug goes in.
