Timing belt

I just bought an 88 Mr2 and it has the stock motor with 134k miles on it. Is this the type of car where if the timing belt breaks it will do alot of damage or is it not a big deal? Just curious because if it would break stuff then i will put it in my parents garage for a little while and replace the timing belt before i drive it, if i will be fine then i won't worry about it right now (money is tight). Thanks for the help.

It could do a lot of damage specially at the age of the car... I suggest you replace it. DIY is always cheaper than taking it to someone so if you know how to do it go for it. If not, take it to a trusted mechanic.... I understand the $$$ situation tho.. i'm in the same boat hahahaha

It is non-interference but i have heard that in some cases it can cause minor damage but that would double your work later.

Well, really all i need it to do is last til next spring. After that point i was planning an engine swap anyways. I guess i will do some checking to see how much of a pain it is to change. Any way to inspect it to tell if it needs changed or not?

2 upper and 3 lower bolts

cover is plastic and it's on the passenger side facing out , there is a harness that runs over it.

If youre at 7000 rpm and your belt breaks, even on non interference motors, youre prolly gonna mess something up.

But if yorue just driving normally and it breaks, prolly not. Your engine is technically non-interference.

I don't plan on running it hard on this motor. I won't have the extra money to fix too many things if they break til after graduation in may so in my possession that motor probably won't see anything over 5500rpm if that.
