aw11 overheating
So i have the over heating problem that is famous in mr2's...
i already bled out the coolant properly.. but after wards when i ran it.. (still overheats only on uphills) there was smoke coming out of the sensor could it be a faulty sensor causing the overheating?? okay so the over heating started because the guy that owned it before was driving it with the reservoir cap with a hole in it. then i tightened all teh hoses to make sure nothing leaks in or out. the oil is not milky. there is no oil in the coolant. so im stumped and i think it's that sensor. help anyone??? |

What sensor are you actually referring to?

if i remember correctly, the sensor down near the thermostat housing is for the thermo fans (i know this was the case in my AE82 corolla which ran the same kind of motor/gearbox) Foto's would help buttttttt one way to tell if it is that sensor, is to pull the wires off it, the thermos should kick right in and stay on until the wire is replaced(do it when the motor is cold, ie when u first start it up)
good luck. I don't have the correct resistance etc for testing this sensor at hand |

There is a plug on the radiator that I think controls the fans, unplug it and the fans should come on with the key just in the on position. If that's the problem replace it or put up with the fans staying on.

fan relays
i know this is late. the relay boxes also have problems. had to put a jumper wire in both relay boxes for all 3 fans. watch the coolant level. these engines will blow head gaskets if overheated too many times. they usually go on the no4 cyl. just tried doing one, now i may be parting this car out. when the gasket goes, you will be burning coolant out the tail pipe, no oil/antifreeze mix

Just as Novatc said, I recently replaced a blown head gasket in my 4age. It was infact the #4cyl and I was blowing coolant into the head and out the exhaust. So my coolant levels were dropping and overheating. Fixed the HG, and the overheating went away.
