exhaust droning

when i first got my mk1 my exhaust fell off, so i thought great! the perfect excuse to do something custom and freeer flowing under there (not to mention weight savings). anyways so i built the shortest lightest system i could, which is a slightly curved pipe about 2 feet long with a performance turbo style muffler on the end. anyways i have been through 3 mufflers now and changed the size of tubing etc. in order to quiet this thing down. and the problem is, it is only too loud between 3k and 4k rpm (right where it runs on the highway). if you rev it over 4k, it sounds really nice, not too loud, if you shift before 3k, it's not bad either, but between 3 and 4 it just resonates in the cabin (deep booming). does anyone know what i am doing wrong? does the system need those stock curves to not blow your eardrums? any help would be appreciated.
