Tune-up, Timing and Idle ??
I just completed a gasket and complete belt job on my 4age. I need to time and set the idle, but can't find a good write-up on how to do it.
Do I need to take the rear right tire off to put a timing light on the crank pulley? Anyone know where I can find a write-up on how to do it correctly? ![]() The car is idling really high right now, like 2.5 k. I tried to adjust the dist. but that didn't solve it. |

I believe you can get a timing light on the mark by shining the light top down.

You should be able to see it from the top. The numbers are by the block and the line is on the inner side of the pulley. If you check it from the rear right tire side, you wont see the line off the pulley to see if the timing is right.

As they said straight down from the top and the BGB i think tells you exactly how to to do it.

Let the engine get fully warmed up, jumper/short the T and E1 pins on the diagnostic plug and set the timing to 10*btdc, that is the middle mark on the pulley and you should be able to see the marks and pointer looking straight down. Make sure all of the accesories and AC are off so the voltage load or AC idle up are not engaged. The cold idle is normally around 2.2k till it warms up.

When I first got everything put back together my cold idle was about 3.5k rpm. sounded like I was doing 70 down the freeway... in my driveway.
I was able to change the static advance on the distributor and get the cold idle down to about 2.5, and the warmed up idle is about 1.4. But my exhaust is pretty dark, so I'm sure I need to get a timing light on it. I'll try as mentioned above and shoot down from the top. I know which mark you are referring to. |
