Help me please

Ok, i got an '85 5spd moonroof mr2. i recently bought it from an mr2 fanatic who said it has a built motor...7age. Anywyas...my car began over heating and i cant tell because my temp gauge from the car doesnt work. Anyways i was goign to take it to the mechanics where it instantly died on me. I tried to start it and it just kept trying to turnover. It'llc rank over five times then there will be a pause and then it'll try again a few more times until the voodoo thats it has stop current flow. What could be wrong?

coolant temp sensor. when not working will not operate your fans and more importantly your air to fuel curve will be wayyyy off. You're describing the exact same problem im having right now. anyways try it because its cheap ($13.00 at Advance autoparts by me)

Mine was pretty sudden too. Do the sensor no matter what, you said you're overheating, make it so you know how hot it is. Stupid to crack a block over a lousy $15 part.

Assuming it's not leaking then I'd suggest get your temp gauge working, and bleed the coolant system.

If the temp gauge doesn't work, and you somehow get it started, you don't know the temperature, and you'll probably end up blowing a head gasket or worse. I'd say do both at the same time. Honestly while you're there you might as well just continuing bleeding the system until you've flushed out all of the old coolant.

Umm thanks for everything guys, but i got my car to the mechanics, and they said everything is fine. The thing that caused my car to stop running was the since it overheated so much, it metled the distributor cap, and fired two other parts. One being a combination of ignitor assy and coil with ignitor, and a resistor pack i think that what it is...here are pics of them

RESISTOR PACK (?)

COIL W IGNITOR & IGNITOR ASSY

I have all these parts if you still need, the temp sensor for the dash gauge is on the water input neck area right of the N/A alternator.

okay. did you replace the coolant temp sensor? If you did you need to clear the codes from the engine. theres a fuse you need to pull, I cant remember which one but its a 7.5 amp I think, and let the computer reset.

Check your distributor cap and small wires. Check your timing belt. Check your crank pulley (they can separate). Check your wire loom at the alternator (to see if the alt top post has dug into and shorted out wires). Check your fuses. Check your timing. Report back. Sorry that you are having problems.

no offense but every mechanic's shop I've brought my car to has been unable to correctly diagnose the issue with my 2. The fact is they see x thousand of these 1995+ cars a day and very, very rarely see something as old as an 85. They aren't especially well trained on our cars with vacuum lines running to every part but the freaking tires. Truth is, check what you can yourself now and save yourself the money. Also keep it in mind that a lot of domestic shops hate... HATE foreign cars. They might not be giving your car the most thurough check-up.

Just be careful man

Umm i know but it was just that i was literally stuck in the middle of the road, i had no other option. But this guy thoroughly checked the car. He even brought a guy to check out all of the cars electrical system, etc.

And to muffinman adn yikes, the distributor was check, timing belt seems fine, fuses are all ok...but from what i was hearing when they tried to start teh car it seemed liek there was no spark getting to the plugs...im thinking it was the coil. Could this be the possiblity? Becasue it just cranks, and cranks but no fire.

Some one else had the same problem recently and after replacing every ignition part including the distributor it turned out that the timing belt had snapped. Make sure that the distributor is spinning.

hello fellas i found out what was wrong with the car, the exhaust camshaft stopped spinning and what happened was that the small tooth form the camshaft that goes onto the camgear broke off and busted the bolt, so the cam gear spun, but wasn't turning the shaft at all
